View Full Version : Irritating MP problem

Hello,

I've been a long time lurker on these boards (since shogun) and I've enjoyed the whole org experience. Not until recently have I begun take liking to the multiplayer aspect of the game, or perhaps I should say that I like what I am hearing http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif

Since I am not allowed to post in the apotherc.. apothecr.. in the problem solving forum I decided to follow the trend and post my grievances here.

Every time I've tried to play this game (MTW) online, I've been thrown at with an error message stating that the game has gone off synch and that the stats differ. This has happened with the regular MTW as well as with the new expansion, VI.

System specs are as follows:

AMD 2100 processor
Asus A7v33 mobo
Kingstone 256 DDR (my other block got toasted for some reason)
Geforce 4 mx (never let your relatives buy PC stuff for you, ever)
Integrated sound
ADSL 256/256 Kb/s broad band
latest drivers for everything

I'd be very grateful if someone could shed light over this issue. Thank you.

PS: I noticed that every time I've been in game, someone from the org has also been there. Glorfindel (Mithrandir I believe), Crandeolon (fellow Finnish) and Heraclus to name a few. I apologise for dropping out.

The out of sync problem in MTW is caused because the stats used in mp is different to the ones used in sp. So if you ve been playing sp and want to join some mp games you will need to restart MTW again.

Not seen it happen in VI yet but situation maybe the same.

Another out-of-sync and stats differ reason is if your game differs from the host's game. In other words: if you have not modified your game, and try to join a game using, for example, the Napoleonic Mod, you'll be out-of-synchronization. Conversely, if you have mod-ed your game, and attempt to join an unmodded game = the same sad result occurs.

Since MTW multiplayer rapidly updates all player's games during battle, in real-time, the games (that is: the databases) must be identical to start, or else one player will begin with an unfair advantage/disadvantage.

Hello Bushido Lurks-no-more. I hope you post means you are entering a new phase in your relationship with us...or are you the strong, silent type? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Thanks for the replies.

I did push Single player tab accidentally before entering the game foyer but does that even count? In anyway, I am sure that every time when I have tried playing online I've gone straight there (ie, no SP before) and experienced the same out come.
I do not have any mods installed nor did I try to join a modded game so that option is ruled out.

Hello Gregoshi. I swing more towards the silent nothing-to-say type http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

It's strange indeed. Are you perhaps using some sort of firewall or router? I think that could cause problems. Also is there a chance you can try to start a LAN game there with your buddies, if you'll get thrown out of sync even there, then smth. is very wrong...

No firewalls, no routers (AFAIK) and no LAN option http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif

I decided to give MP one last chance before I'd reinstall the whole darn game so I mustered all my courage, entered the foyer and hosted a game. Someone came, we did battle, I was winning (my assumption, losing all of one's infantry can't be good) and boom. An error message, but refreshingly it was different this time;
Game has gone out of sync, Game state differs on different machines.
That means (more or less) that one player is laggin behind and experiencing everything differently (perhaps he was winning in his game), doesn't it?
It seems that I don't have to reinstall, yet.

My online name is Cadarn and if you happen to see me give me a shout and hand my first humiliating defeat, ok? Thanks http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Quite embarrasing to keep replying to myself but this will be the very last time when you'll hear me complaining. I've finally admitted that MTW:VI MP will not work for me. Every time I even try to play a game online I will be thrown back in the menu because I am out of sync. Reinstall did not help my case at all. Maybe I am to be blamed for this (I am not tech savvy), maybe not but this I know; VI was the last CA game which I bought. No more money from me, nada.

First Shogun which worked but as I was in the middle of GC championships I couldn't dedicate time to it and now MTW refuses to work online. Just my luck http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif

Hey Gregoshi, seems like I will stay here as a lurker after all http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif

Bushido, don't quite give up yet. I'm going to copy your problem to the Apothecary. There has to be a simple explanation for the problem.

http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/pissed.gif Gah http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/pissed.gif

This sounds strange, and if u got VI installed no patches n such should be your prob... Hrm http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/dizzy.gif

Lets hope the lads in the apothecary™ can help u out Bushido, cause this annoys me a lot. We need as much new blood as possible in the MP lobby, so don't give up.

See me around, give me a holler http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

This is pretty strange. I don't play MTW or VI online, but I do some flight simming. My 1 year old MS install got corrupted when installing MTW (probably due to a weak PSU.) None of my other 50+ programs ever gave it trouble...just MTW's install. Eventually got MTW installed and it worked well, but eventually things deteriorated. Tried many, many things in the OS, drivers etc. Finally just reinstalled the OS. Also have had odd things happen on another machine when my modem failed--lots of hung connections that were sort of working. Recently had a netgear network card die and it was giving the machine fits as well. Hard to say what was chicken or the egg. Seems to run decently flying IL2 online now without getting locked up, but I'm not sure if it was the OS install or the network card that made the difference.

The whole Mediaeval thing has been bad Karma after Shogun. From the frustration of dropped games, campaign crashes, relog after game, restart game after hosting, all drop if one drops, unbalanced factions and units and the countless other bugs, maybe the sooner this game is history the better. The Org has become a place where the community do battle rather than the foyer.
I read something once that went a bit like this....
We all know or at least should know that what is meant by suggested PC spec is basic minimum..
Well I think it's a breach of trading standards personally. I spent a lot of cash on a new PC, my spec is well above the minimum or recommended spec, yet I still get silly random things with Mediaeval, whether v1.1 or VI 2.0, that make me feel like hurling the CD.
It's a shame we don't go back to Shogun, my whole Mediaeval experience has been quite average

I've wondered why you all keep playing MTW even despite its flaws and short comings when you could be playing near perfect game like Shogun.
Sure, I've only played couple games of Shogun and... 6 unfinished (thanks to MTW crashing) games of Medieval but still I could sense the greatness of Shogun. The maps were a lot better (I like diversity), the units more balanced (it's easier to balance fewer units than some 200 odd units [which is why mtw can't be balanced]) and the general feeling was more... satisfying.
Now, you might wonder why I am not playing Shogun instead of MTW. Easy, I can't. Must be a drivers problem but I've tried more or less every detonator driver to no avail. Only thing better in MTW is the map which is being drawed very nicely. When trying my Shogun cd's at my friends PC I noticed how blank that map was.

Ps.
All these flame wars which have occurred through Org's history (as I said, a very long time lurker) have been quite childish. It is never a good thing to confuse words honour and elitism.

Hello ErikJanssen. The welcoming on these boards sure are different from those of online :P No one has thrown curses at me nor have they called me newbie thrash. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif

Shogun was a bit too easy. MTW is a lot more challenging and there is far more variety.

As for the problem running Shogun... CA has had a lot of problems with that. Back when I had a GF2 GTS the only driver that would run it was 10.8 (or something like that). Problem was that the game would not launch properly. Worked fine with my Radeon ViVo and a Banshee with all drivers I tried. Later I found it didn't work with my 8500...fortunately installing Mongol Invasion got it to work...go figure. Wierd bugs in the CA code, but only at launch, LOL.
