Hakonarson,
i am looking for a good one piece work on the history of the byzantine empire. something along the lines of what
" M. Cary and H. H. Scullard, A History of Rome down to the reign of Constantine, 3rd ed. London, 1975."
does for roman history. i've read ostrogorsky but its too adbridged and i was wondering if you or anyone else who reads this knows of a good title in english or german.
thanks.

I can't help you sorry - my sources on Byzantium are all bits & pieces - general military histories of the era, a few Ospreys, works on Narses & the Varangians, Anna Comnena's "Alexiad", Runciman's History of the Crusades, etc.
Cant help... bits and pieces...Ospreys?? Im really disappointed now Hakonarson http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif

Now why's that CBR? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif
Byzantium isn't my favourite era for starters, but there's nothing wrong with most Ospreys - indeed some are worthy of being called academic texts, and "bits 'n pieces" tend to have lots more detailed info than generic histories - and some of use are moer interested in that than the sweep of empire over hundreds of years http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
Im sure their must be plenty of books on this in english, go to a library (preferably a big one) and ask for their help.
I can give u a tip of one book on the subject though im not sure if its translated from Swedish to English. Anyway the authour is Alf Henriksson (yes Henriksson not Hakonarson http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif ) and the books name i think is the rather unappealing; Bysantine history from 323 (i think) to 1453. Its about 400 pages and cant cover everything in detail of course but roughly gives the politÃcal history and some more. Though as i said i doubt it has been translated to english but u could look it up and find out.

Ok, here we go:
Warren Treadgold.
A History of the Byzantine State and Society
Stanford University Press, Stanford, 1997.
Without a doubt this title is the most exhaustive and up-to-date title covering Byzantine history in its entirety currently available.

I'm reading Byzantium Apogee right now. Its one of three books covering the empire.
Its at home so I'll have to post the author later.
Good book and quite an entertaining read.
LOLed when I read about the Bulgarian Khan Krum. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
Found it online.
Its from John Julius Norwich

There's a wargaming site that has a connection to Amazon that might be worth looking at - Fanaticus - Byzantine booklist (http://fanaticus.org/DBA/bookstore/bookstore4.html)

I agree Swamp thing, Treadgold's Byzantine history is one of the most exhaustive but also one of the best around.
His eye for detail and incorporating the little events in Byzantine history makes it a complete read.
My fav chapter is "two fights for survival"
