I've come up with an idea for the Lord of the Rings mod to give it a very distinctive feeling to the normal M:TW campaign. Let me know what you think of this.
Basic idea
We all know that certain provinces were never that developed and other provinces were the capitol provinces of a nation. Now I have the idea to make certain provinces able to make elite units and other provinces only the common troops.
How can it be done
Normally a resource (iron, gold, silver, copper, salt) provides the ability to build Mines or Metalsmiths. Now let's agree on the following:
Gold = Level 3 province: Capitol province
Silver = Level 2 province
Copper = Level 1 province
Salt = Level 0 province: Wasteland
Next give every province either gold, silver, copper or salt resources. Adjust the building_prod13.txt file so that for example Royal Court requires gold and Town Watch requires copper. Every building requires either gold, silver or copper, with the basic buildings requiring copper.
So what's the result?
It probably applies more to Middle Earth than Europe, since Europe didn't really have wastelands, but you can still integrate it in your mod for the following reasons:
- Armies will now truly reflect how their real life counterparts consisted of. Since level 1 provinces are the most common, spearmen will be the core of the armies. Level 3 provinces are unique so you won't see many Royal Knights.
- It will now really hurt when you loose your capitol province. Instead of simply rebuilding in another province you must fight to regain your throne
Is it perfect?
No, not yet. I would rather be able to use new resources so that gold, copper, silver and salt can be used for Mines.
So what do you think of this? Any ideas to improve it? While perhaps not so appropiate for normal M:TW I think it will give the Lord of the Rings MOD a very distinctive feel and gameplay. The game will be more centered around battles then teching up and trading.
Cheers, Duke John
