View Full Version : Realistic battle building damage?

When you take a province, it seems like way to many of the enemy's buildings are destroyed. Now you could argue that your men loot the province but I think the general would be smart enough to stop his men from burning the buildings/cities. I think we should look for a way to mod it so that it only destroys one or two buildings. If I take Constantinople, the center of the world, I want a great city, not a great city reduced to a wooden fort and a spear hut. What do you think? Thanks.

I can understand buildings being destroyed though I think it is still to many.

My big question is what is the difference between damaged and destroyed?

When a building is damaged it means that it has been reduced to a lower quality building.

Like an armorers guild being reduced to an armorers workshop.

I agree there is too much building destruction. When you take a nice city, you end up having to spend 25 years rebuilding it back to what it was.

the destruction seems to be historically based. crusaders sacked Constantinople in 1204 and spent 3 days looting, raping and pillaging. from what I have read this kind of city destroying activity was encouraged rather than restrained.

This would depend on the kind of general and circunstances. If it was a hard and long battle there would usually be more destroying, raping and pillaging. Not allowing for it to happen could be dangerous for a general... so they didn't press their luck too much.

Fine. Rape the women. Loot their houses...maybe even the treasury...but why would they burn down buildings at random?

Maybe the problem is that battles are not realistic in MTW.

You allways fight in open terrain and, in fact, you never take a city. If there were cities battles probably you will damage/destroy a lot of building tring to get enemies out of them ...

RTW will be better in that issue.

A question a bit off topic (or not?)

How could they burn down Athens? I mean, the buildings are mostly from stone aren't they? And I dunno any stone that burns http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I am not trying to score cheap political points or de-rail a game thread off-topic, but just look at Iraq now. It was a short, almost uncontested war and the occupying armies have been pretty restrained (in comparison to medieval equivalents). But I think many of us are shocked at the damage to the country's infrastructure the war caused. Today's New York Times has a report, Iraqi oil industry decimated by looting. What happened to Byzantium was far, far worse.

I suspect parts of France in the 100 years war resembled Afghanistan's degradation after 20 years of war.

I think a lot of medieval warfare was partly paid for - motivated by? - looting. For example, I was reading about the Islamic Ghazi fighters - religiously motivated, they were paid for by the spoils of war. I suspect the Christians could be equally rapacious (Byzantium again, as an example).

BTW, I think VI toned down destruction of buildings. It was excessive, IMO, but now seems reasonable.

Could just be the way my minds working today with lack of sleep but Id hate for any tabloid news papers to get hold of a thread where people are discussing realisim and talking about rapeing and pilaging in the same breath

with a quote like this, you understand that you can now never run for public office.
