Okay I'm no slouch at this game, but lately I've had the misfortune of not being very, um, helpful in the 3v3 games I like to play.
seems all I'm capable of doing is grinding up the enemy army, but failing just enough to not be victorious on my end.
thanks to you guys, I understand the valor points vs. improvements system a little better, but there has to be more to it. It's more frustrating than fun to come off a Hard Difficulty campaign, sweeping the map while outnumbered and outclassed, but then not doing so well with "even" points armies and allies to help.

Soly, can you explain us what you think the problem is? Mass rout with 500 guys alive, or slowly grinded down and then routed? Or always crushed by this last cav in the back?
Keep playing, and if I have a chance to see you, we'll see what we can do (but I am certainly not expert).
I also recommand you play with two clanmates that I have seen devoting a lot of time helping newcomers; Heart and Tempiic.
On top of being nice and fun to play with, they also try to help and are very patient.
I am not as good as they are, but we'll try my best http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
Louis the Simurgh,
Hi
Maybe the units tire to fast http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif .
But seriously, alot has to do with the formations you use and when to engage and whether you have missile cover, position of general or are you being swiped (seen alot of that lately. Generalised points but i found they matter more here then they did in 'ol shoggy.

I have great games (usually when my allies play like retarded rabbits) one session then play like a noob the next http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/dizzy.gif although the noob games are becoming few and far between now.

Everyone goes out of form once in a while. Try hosting a couple of open 1v1 games, you'll invariably get a couple of newbs who you can then thrash and get your mojo back http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/pat.gif

Check the morale of your units by pressing F1 (in custom battles f.e.) Then upgrade them with valour accordingly.

Hi Soly,
Well your first problem sounds like too much campagin and AI battles. There is just no way the can prepare a player for multies except in the most basic way.
The first thing you need to determine about ur losses in multi, is which of the three areas is the main cause of your downfall. Knowing which of these areas is your trouble spot will allow you to focus your efforts at fixing short comings.
1. Are you being out Strategized -- i.e. are you dieing because you are not coordinating well with your allies? One way to know this is if you are the only army left at the end, if allies routinely face more than just the "guy" opposite them, or if you are facing "more than just the guy opposite" and don't see help from an ally unit or two.
2. Are you being out maneuvered & tactics? Here are some questions that might answer that: are your units getting hit from the flanks? rear? Is the enemy able to get outnumbered situationssomewhere along the combat front where a couple of your units must face 2:1 or 3:1 odds? Are your units routinely being attritted by missle fire (not routed, just reduced down? -- this can have a big impact when the actual fighting starts) Is the enemy getting better missle or naptha fire when the fighting starts...
3. If you can honestly say no to the above problems, then you need to take a look at your unit purchasing skills, because you're probably being out-bought. No skill or tactic can fix that problem once a game starts, and is probably the root cause of many losses (not that it can't be overcome, but it makes life significantly more difficult http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif )...The "Art" of the buy is that there is no one magic army... you need to buy the army that has a unit mix that suits your playing style. (are you cav oriented or foot oriented? do you want to be a self contained army or an army that can support allies easily?) After you figure out what MIX of troops you like, then it becomes the numbers game that was explained by Yuuk and Louis on another thread... MORALE is the key -- make sure all your units that engage in hand-to-hand have about the same (high) morale level--find a morale number that works for you and try to buy all troops to get it there evenly. Becareful how you spend, some units already come with high morale--spend the money on valor upgrades on other units then. Units that will be missle-dueling usually could use an armor upgrade...
Hopefully this works as food for thought... looking foward to catching u online http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Hail Everyone,
Wow, that was one of the most concise and piercing answers I've seen to this question Shingmitch (which has been asked many times).
I agree with ShingMitch in all he said. The part I would stress a little more is sp. Once you have the basic manuevering down leave sp. SP can handicap you. Tactics and unit performance is deceiving in sp. This can slowly turn your playing style into an obsolete and inadequate one for mp.
A good mp will always be a good sp but a good sp doesnt really mean a good mp.
Also take a look at your unit kills at end of battles to slowly get a better feel for unit performance. If a unit consistently has low kills loss ratio (dont count captures) then you might consider tweaking it or dumping it.

i think this is partly where i'm at right now. i haven't been looking over my kill ratios to see whats working, and basically i'm being out-bought by my opponents.
thanks

Watch your replays. Especially the ones you lose. Check out exactly the types of units the winning players bought. Also count the little flags each unit has. This represents how much valor was bought. Soon you will field the same class army as the victors, and buying your army is half the battle.
