View Full Version : Kings' Portraits
In viking_heroes.txt, there's one value under FAMOUS_KINGS that's supposed to be able to set the portrait of the king. I've noticed, though, all of the values are set to -1, which is random, even though the hero kings' portraits in the game aren't random at all. It also doesn't seem to do anything when I change these values. Is this some kind of bug?
So, how can I change a king's portrait to another existing one without actually tempering with the .bif files?
Also: What does the second value in the king's definition do? The value after the name# and before the command#.

In using the Heroes Default or Vikings heros file the protraits are for the most part given the -1 for a random portrait from the Kings portrait file, to change the number and get it to correspond to a specific portrait is achieved by using the Misc portrait file, dont ask me why this file was used or why it works , all I know is I have created new Heroes Like Napoleon for The Lords Napoleonic Mod and it works I have matched name and portrait. You have to assign the Hero a number that corresponds to a portrait in the Misc file of that heros religion i.e. Catholic/Misc if the portrait you want to asign to a hero is labeled misc07 in the file you would put the number 6 in the appropraite part of the heroes file, the numbers start at -1 so they are all 1 number behind i.e. 6 is 7 7 is 8 etc.You can copy over portraits from the Kings file or others or make your own as we did for The Napoleonic era.
Where is the file that indexes the portraits? Until now, I was under the impression that the portrait number corresponds directly to the portait numbers.
Apologies for unearthing this old thread but...
Has anyone actually confirmed that Kings portraits can actually be done and specified?
Hero generals work as said when using misc folder, but i've tried the same for kings and nothing seems to work. Seems the random portrait selection is hardcoded for kings?

nope they use the same rule as hero portraits, if you set your famous king portrait to 15 for example, game will look for misc16.tga in misc folder. ive made and use custom portraits for all kings so they arent hardcoded
Were the king's you replaced for the default game or part of a mod?
Maybe what I'm doing is not possible.
I'm doing a mod(MTW:VI v2.01) which has it's own separate folders like the VI expansion does. I'm also using in my startpos file:
SetNameData:: "campmap\\names\\xxx_heroes.txt"
and
PortraitsOverride:: FN_xx "xxxxxx"
The directory structure of my misc portraits dir is:
campmap\portraits\mod\xxxxxx\misc
(also tried mod\misc, mod\Catholic\misc, etc)
In the xxx_heroes.txt file I replace the -1 entry with the number for my specific king(4 or 04 for misc05.tga, etc)
The King that shows up on the faction select screen is always wrong and is from the \Kings directory even though the King has the correct stats and name from the heroes file. I'm also using a totally different portrait set in misc from the ones in kings.
Maybe I'm doing something wrong or left something out. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif
from what i know, even if your faction use a custom directory the game still search in the misc directory of the religion, ..\campmap\Portraits\Catholic\Misc for example

For some strange reason, the portraits in my mod are the originals in the Faction Selection Screen, but in-game have the new portraits. This doesnt really bother me all that much since it only is a problem during that one screen, except for the fact that I might someday make a matriarchal faction with Queens instead of Kings, and it doesnt help the fact that a male King portrait is sitting pretty on the select screen.
Thanks for the info guys.
I got it to work just like kekvitirae described(only proper in-game but not at faction select) BUT, it only seems to work when using the Default campaign file structure. It kind of makes sense as when I look in the VI files they are all -1 for random portraits but the default campaign has some hero portraits that are not -1.
Trying to modify VI or my own mod for kings specific portrait is still a no-go for me. I've tested this stuff with VI v2.01, maybe previous versions would work.
I was hoping to preserve the default campaign but I guess I can overwrite it. No big deal... just one more MTW install. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
