well, there's always the MUDS. some of those are quite good. you can also check www.tucows.com in their games area. they post demos and even betas at times. free definitely makes it tougher though. i dont know if the mud connector is still up or not. they had hundreds of MUDS to choose from, mostly text, but a few graphical.
and if yer not too adamant about it being rpg, i saw one recently that was a 3d graphic sci fi game that i believe was free. do a search in yahoo for Wulfram. oh wait, i've got the link...here: http://www.wulfram.com/index.php it's a sci fi hover tank shooter, i think.
boy, i dont have the links on this machine, but i know there were a couple of korean fantasy games out there not long ago. try a google search or yahoo.
and let us know if you find anything.

I use one free RPG its a MUD of LOTR.
I would not normally mension it but in this case I will as it is the most amasing MUD Ive ever seen. Not only is it huge but it really has depth and character to it. I almost feel like im walking through Tolikens world. The people are friendly unless they are one of the evil races. Yes thats right they are working on playing orcs etc as well as the usual.
Ever wanted to sit in bagend and smoke a pipe. well now you can.

If I remember correctly MUD stands for Multi User Dungeon.
They were the earlist multiplayer online games. Most tend to be text based i.e you enter a room there is a door to the north and the east. You see a sword on the ground.
Mny of them are very popular.

yup. MUD = multi user dungeon or multi user dimension. dimension because not all of them were fantasy. and particularly in the early days of the net most of them were text only. many of my early experiences on the net and even before the internet were with online text based fantasy games. island of kesmai on compuserve and then genie, dragon's gate on genie and then aol, early net muds like realms of despair and many others.
i even made and ran my own for a while and we added in ascii graphic mapping in 3d. quite fun and one of the first truly huge games on the net. we ran it on a linux machine with about 25 megs of ram and another 25 megs of disk space. hehe, talk about tight code :)
many of the well known MUDS have thousands of players registered and in the early 90's they were THE best games online. most all of them house a staff who build and monitor the various regions of the land. they are more closely aligned with the old table top dungeons and dragons system, since the staff tend to interact in roleplay with the players, taking on the personnas of gods, or evil critters or creating real time quests and all those sorts of things. you dont get that kind of real interaction in most online games and it can be extremely fun.
one of the reasons for the success of these games is that they arent graphic. sounds odd in todays multi gigabyte sight and sound million dollar production games, but when you dont have to spend a fortune on graphics and sound, you tend to concentrate on game play, and that's what's missing in a lot of the games out today...too much sight and sound and not enough pure game. developers (and this isnt aimed at CA) would do well to play some muds for a while.

Ah, got to love MUDs. My first experience with MUDs was a LOTR mud. i would chase wounded sparrows around town, trying to kill something for experience points. As often as not, the sparrow would win the contest. Not to mention rats, small dogs, or other deadly beast i was too weak to kill. lets not even mention goblins. character data was saved proportional to their level, and as i couldnt play daily, and couldnt level up in one sitting, i continually had to start over. frustration led to my verbal harrassment of the feable roleplaying attempts that i encountered. this proved fun, but didnt lend itself to popularity.
