As i found the vikings boring to play(their units are too strong i think) i started a game as the Picts(on hard). I think ive seen two *very* minor incursions from the vikings, and after i build a few ships they simply stayed away. I just sank the few ships they had and now, i can almost play like the vikings, having total sea superiority(made ireland *very* easy to take&#33http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif. I would have thought the vikings had more sea power than that. At least the mercians looks like they are gonna be a tough one, having 2/3 of britian. Anyone else experienced this?

I have only played a few Viking campaigns.

In most of them the Vikings did a good job of raiding instead of invading the coasts.

They would show up, kick my butt, have a huge rebellion, and leave.

In a couple though they hardly did anything.

Start a new campaign or two and see what happens.

Did the vikings ever acctually land in Britain with the intent of staying their? Or was it just raids and pillageing? Sorry not real good with history http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif

I know they are mostly raiders, but they arent raiding http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
They did kick my butt in one very early battle, because i overestimated my celtic warriors, and got 3xceltic warriors + 1 crossbow unit whooped by 40 viking huscarls http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif But apart from that there has only been one other attempt, i guess they havent raided anymore because i sank their ships. I was a bit surprised how easy it was, even my basic ship always won when attacking the viking ships. Its still a fun camp. though, the mercians are pretty powerful(richest, largest army, and most advanced&#33http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif so i think its gonna be interesting. But i think my next campaign will be an Early campaign, not more VI camps. for me.

Yes, they did. In fact, at the beginning of the 11th century, King Aethelred II ("The Unready" - actually unraed which means un-counselled or ill-advised) was deposed by King Cnut (or Canute), a Danish king, whose family ruled England for a couple of decades before Edward the Confessor (Aethelred's son, who was raised in Normandy) reclaimed the throne.

By this time, the northern part of England had been known as the "Danelaw" for decades - the Anglo-Saxon kings had all been killed and/or driven out, and Danish law, rather than English law, was the law of the land.

The chances are that if you don't see the Vikings they're off raiding someone else's lands. This can happen to anyone playing a Pictish campaign, because there are easier and richer pickings elsewhere - the AI isn't daft and tends to go to the (easy) money, which generally means the east coast of England, not the wilds of Scotland.

The Vikings are also traders, btw, and will look for ports to 'trade' at, so building a port will eventually attract Vikings. Including the nasty ones. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

It says in the manual you can raid and leave without taking over the province, ow can you do that? I always end up taking over, anyway ya in mine before my computer just well, its really slow, lol, anyhow they would take an area over and leave, basically making money and then going on else where. Very Viking like.

Try loading Wes's v. 2.0 medmod for VI. It really enhances the way the Vikings play. They work harder to get trade routes, build better troops, and are more aggressive.

Ziphnor... Maybe you should try a harder difficulty, they may become more agressive then.

By the way, "Canute" as you call him (his real name was Knut), was not the only one that settled a kingdom in Britain of the Scandinavians...
It happened before the christanization too. There were the Norwegian Dublin kingdom from 852 (allthough there had been a Viking kindom there earlier), there were a Danish kingdom in York from 876 (which became a part of Norwegian Dublin from 920). All the Scottish isles also belonged to "Vikings" (mostly to the Earldom of Orkney which was a Norwegian vassal from 875).

I just want to confirm Mary's post here. I started my first game with the 2.02 startpos files yesterday, and it has totally changed the game. I had never seen the Vikings do anything but small, unsuccessful raids before, and they never were able to hold on to territory. In my current game, they sent a unit of Archers at me, the Scots, on about turn 4. I don't know why; maybe it was just to try and isolate me from the sea. Anyway, they have been raising hell ever since. At one point, they were at war with every other faction, and managed to wipe out the Welsh before the combined efforts of the rest of us drove them back across the sea. In the first 30 turns or so, they probably attacked 25 to 33 percent of the provinces in the game, and held up to ten at any one time.
It's finally the scenario as it was meant to be, and all I did basically was straighten out the ship priorities (see DOC's thread in the Dungeon), and give the Vikings a merchant to start the game with in Jutland.
