View Full Version : Funniest bridge battle
Im playing as the Turks in a campaign on hard.
I have spain/northern africa/ and up to the starting lands of the turks in the east.
The english declared a crusade againt me, 10 or so turns after i landed a smallish army in wessex. The next turn i was attacked in wessex by the british king and his army(archers, lots of royal knights a few spearmen). The battle was across a double bridge. I blocked up both bridges, but put most weight on the one closest to his starting position, and kept the cavalry on the other bridge.
When he attacked he put everything on the closest bridge. Right when his whole army was on the bridge(more or less) my turcoman horse and armenian hv. cavs, charged around, killed a single unit of royal knights(with some trouble) and routerd his archers.
You can perhaps percieve how silly a position the remains of his army was in, caught on a bridge, with enemies at *BOTH* ends http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif Obviously he was utterly defeated. Amusingly, his crusade attacked its target on the very same turn, decided it couldnt win and withdrew. In the bridge battle the king died, and the whole of england collapsed into rebels.
The british really had a hard day(or year i suppose) http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
right on.
ive used the same technique before, with generally good results. i do remember one time where routed enemy rallied and trapped my cav between them and the bridge. so many dead horsies.

I once fought a bridge battle that rivals this one. I was the attacker, and there was only one bridge. Both me and the AI deployed a bit to the left of the bridge. I started moving my forces torwards the bridge, expecting a long and bloody struggle to cross it.
To my astonishment, the AI did not move at all until I had crossed the bridge with my forward elements and set up a defensive line Three units of Italian Infantry allowed my heavy cavalry to cross and outflank the enemy, who quickly routed.
Needless to say, my Horsies got lots of exercise that day http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif

What can i say i was never any good at geography. When i say spain, i mean Leon, castille, portugal etc, the whole "lump" http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif Does the whole thing have a name?
To Foreign Devil:
I saw this once too, and thought it was pretty weird, but then again i've seen the AI deploy the general unit right in front of my army while the rest of the army hides in the forest

it is strange how many people dont know about the iberian peninsular. It is also startiling how many people dont know northern ireland exist and/or dont know its an island http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif
Funniest bridge battle was in MP, I sat at one end with loads of Longbowman, 4 Organ Guns, and the rest Billmen and Halberdiers. The enemy (over a LAN) had chosen an entirely melee army. CMAA walk accross... Splat. Knights charge accross... Splat the survivors cut to bits. Hardly any casulties for 100s of kills.

lol that is why organ guns are frowned upon in bottleneck area like bridges or sieges.
imagine this.
Some siege engines destroy a wall and the enemy quickly sends troops through the breach. Unbeknown t thenm you have two organ guns placed near that breach as soon as they enter splat and if he sends cav through you have the guns nice and staggered so at least one will fire and have anti cav beside them just in case http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smokin.gif

Yeah, quite annoying. I was aware he had portugal, i was just teasing him, since my country is next to spain since 1140, and something that old should be better known. Ireland (specially N. Ireland)has the same kind of problem.
What? Ireland is an ISLAND???http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

NORTH Ireland is an island?
I fought a nice bridge battle as the turks. A catholic revolt had come up and the engllish had invaded...can't remember where. I set up on one side of the bride, actually on one side of two bridges while the english and rebels were on the other. I expected to have to defend both bridges. To my surprise the english and rebels faught one another (english were some archers, feudal knights, hospital knights and spearmen...catholics were gothic knights, chiv. calvary, etc.)anyway, the rebels won and all I had to do was march arcross the bridge and wipe out what was lest which wasn't much And...I got a specialist defender virtue for the feat Hoorah http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif
I had a bridge battle last night against 2000 Hungarians.
I had 5 units of 80 Welsh Longbowman positioned so that they could cover bother Bridges and a unit of handgunners covering each bridge with a unit of Billmen defending each bridge.
So many bodies...the horror...the horror....

Northern Ireland is not an island. It is however on an island and could therefore be called a part of an island. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Organ guns and crossbows, bridge battle, against the horde need i say more http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
Can anyone remind me of the tech tree requirements for Organ guns please ?
MTW install path\MTW-VI_viking_tech_tree.pdf
The funniest I've seen was when attacking & the defending AI army crossed over both bridges & got walloped by me on my side http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wacko.gif
Its always fun if you're defending two bridges to send calvary accross the other bridge and crash into the back of the enemy whos assualting your defended bridge.
This is even more violent if the enemy has low quality troops at his rear as they flee and your calvary crash into the back of his better troops who are being held in place by your infantry : )
