Hi swifticus welcome to the org http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif
Although your probably best ignoring my advise about multiplayer, why don't you tell us a little more about the enemy you were facing and the positionaing of your troops and general situation when they started to run away.
Enjoy your stay, sure someone will be able to help you http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/pat.gif

did you give your troops valour upgrades?

At Times if you get rushed -esp. if by 2 armys at once, your armys moral will fail, often right after the intial impact upon your line.......You get to stand there & watch your men emulate rabbits...... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif
Having units (yours or an allies) route through your lines will do it to... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif
Try to find a good defensive postion, close to your allies for mutual support. And keep a reserve force off to the side to attempt to salvage the situation....

Ok, you ordered Armoured Spearmen to Hold against a Highland Clansmen charge. Highland Clansmen have and irresistible charge and, if I remember correctly, a bonus against armoured troops due to their two-handed sword. At v2, I cant imagine they lasted long versus that kind of charging power. It is a well-known practice to upgrade Clansmen heavily, and this produces wicked charges.
And do you mean Morale of 2, or 2 Valour upgrades? How many florins were you allowed to spend? Either way, versus Clansmen, these spearmen will go down FAST.
Ideally, spears do not beat swords. The best thing to do versus Clansmen is to sneak in some archery volleys before they charge, and attack the Clansmen with shock units like heavy cavalry and Huscarles. Do not let them tear up your spear units, as they will rout and further demoralize your men. I imagine that is what happened here.
Also, what units did you put into Hold? Everything? Hold Position or Hold Formation? Hold Formation grants you +2 Defense and -2 attack. It can help you withstand charge attacks, but will be a detriment if you continue to have it on any non-spear units after they take the initial charge.
How was your front line? Remember to make it nice and straight, and wide enough to prevent any enemy front-line attacks from wrapping around it and flanking your side units.

Thanks everyone http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
good advice, will attempt to put it into action now http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif
Use Jomsvikings with 4 in morale upgrade... They usually seem to be against cowardness.

Try potential MP armies out in SP custom battles first.
After you have selected the units, and given them valor, weapons, and armor upgrades and started the battle, hit F1 to see the units stats. This will give you an idea of their morale, attack, defense stats.

I think you are talking about valour upgrade of 2. Because if u put units on an MP field with morale 2 and 3, it's no wonder why they get routed. You should try to go for morale 8, to keep it reasonable.
And yes, you have to learn what your units are strong and weak against and plan accordingly. Good to test in a custom battle vs. AI, as somebody already stated.
