personally, I really like Ashi due to their cheapness in price and lightning speed to catch up archers...
but their biggest probl will be they waver or rout too easily... therefore, once I boost their morale from drill dojo and palace(anything else?...High honor?), can I use them as regular Yari Sam?...
Thanks in advance http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

No. YA will NEVER be able to do as much damage as YS
YA are inferior to YS in many aspects:
Low morale: 6 point less!
Low Attack: 1 point less.
Low Defense: 3 point less.
(same armor though)
Meaning that, you will need a lot of updates and honor boost to make a YA to perform as well as YS.
But then again, with the same facility, you can create some super-tough YS.
So all in all, I don't think replacing YS with inferior YA is a good idea.
If you really want the speed, go for shock troops and cavalry.

Some good honor Ys are capable of holding that line no matter what the enemy is http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

Don't use only honour, use theforce, too.

Yari Ashigaru versus Yari Samurai!
just look at their names.. It'll tell all!!
I think that the game developers should thinked twice because the say that to train SAMURAI is only 200 koku bahh!! i think i real Japan the army consists of like every u got 6 yari ashigaru u got one samurai!!!
Samurai is underestimated in this game.

Crap moral - end of.
One runs they ALL run.

In non-patched MI, the morale was increased in the game itself and upgrades were cheap, and high honour upgraded YA rocked the world...beating everyone.
In patched MI, morale was brought back like STW and upgrades made more expensive, and YA are not worthed anymore. They will rout very easily and you can't get them with full upgrades and stuff with standard koku - so forget them.

Zoom in on them and just look at the difference! The YA have far shorter spears and the YS's have extra spikes on the end. Take a look at their clothing aswell. USELESS!

Terazawa, I think he means single-player campaign.

Actually you can avoid Ashi all routing together by placing on field reserves far off to the side of where other units will route... sort of a large flanking formation.
And then attack after the other Ashi have routed. Use samurai to hold the opponents in place so the enemy doesn't just charge down the fleeing Ashi(Nags are good as are YS).
My current campaign on Expert 1530, I'm allowing only one type of upgrade for my Ashi so I have +2 morale Ashi, +2 Armour Ashi, +1 Weapon Ashi and +2 Honour Ashi armies running around. Get to see pretty quickly which are more useful and how to use them differently in battles.

True. But who doesn't want some MP tips? http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

I've found that no matter what the honor of YA, they always waver...sometimes even as they charge...however, if indeed their honor is high and they are supported, they fight quite well, the poor soldiers seem to die off and you have a unit of 20-30 peasants who fight like samurai...samurai who need thier hand held, but samurai none the less....I personally would rather fight YA with ND...but I digress...

Gotta remember that ashi run quite fast. Rather than having them be the front lines (a bad idea due to the routing) you hold them in reserve. When an enemy unit wavers, have the ashi charge. The enemy flees, but are brought down by the faster-running ashigaru. Ashi's are also effective against cavalry, and are much cheaper to get. They are important in the early-game, but later in the game you DO want to depend more on the yari samurai. Otherwise, late in the game your ashi should be armored are well armed. Armored ashi make great arrow-fodder, and still cost the same!
A fun tactic is to pair an ashi unit with a No-Dachi unit. They both run very fast, and the ND will keep the YA from panicking too quickly. A great surprise flanking combo. Just watch out for archers.

I don't know if you guys notice this...
Once I put my 2 units of Ashis alongside w/ 1 unit of YS... these Ashis stayed in battle and fight like YS... seems like these YS fighting next to them really give them a morale boost http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif
