View Full Version : Gunpowder anomaly?

OK, let me admit here that this may be a case of nothing wrong at all but I'm too lazy to do some research.

I'm playing the MTW campaign with the VI expansion as the Hungarians. The Golden Horde showed up with an organ gun and mortars. Also, handgunners are available as mercenaries, but I sure can't build any gunpowder units yet. This is a game I started in the early period, and gunpowder units showed up around the time of the Golden Horde (1229 I think).

Isn't this early for gunpowder units to be appearing, or am I just confused? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/dizzy.gif

There have been several reports of that happening, I think in my Aragonese campaign I was able to build some gunpowder units before the Late age, I suppose this is tied to the unit build file, and could be corrected easily, although I didn't verify that yet.

Gunpowder units can show up as mercenaries/revolters/rebels as soon as high period starts. Unfortunatelly, the only cues for mercs/rebels are periods, not events (unlike the factions; event can be specified as a switch for buildings, but not for units; however, if you don't have a building you cannot produce units, so that effectively limits you; mercs etc. don't need buildings, and therefore the paradox).

I wonder why CA made gunpowder units available in high in VI. But it`s of course no prob to mod it.

Erm, because gunpowder gets invented in mid-1200? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Gunpowder was not invented in 13th century. It was invented much earlier. It is only known to European through the contacts with the Mongols. Eastern Europe: Mongols used them as encendiary devices and crude, small cannons were used to blast walls and scare the enemy. Western Europe, through Italian Marco Polo.

But let's not getting into who invent what, or we would have to trace back warfare to sticks and stones...

I was speaking in game terms, LadyAnn, my apologies for not being clear. I should have said : In game, the gunpowder event happens in mid-1200, so what would be the point of building the buildings when you can't recruit anything in them until 50 years later?

Oh, my apologies :)

Yes, it is an anomaly if you could build gunsmith without the gunpowder event.

But gunpowder units didn`t appear before the 14th century. In MTW they were restricted to late. I just wonder why they changed this.

They had fixed the gunpowder issue in the previous patch: you could build the gunpowerd buildings as soon as the even happened, but were allowed to build units only in the late era. However, it appears this is broken again in the VI expansion. Gunpowder units appear in inns (and rebel armies) even before the event and one can build gunpowder units right after the gunpower event in the high era now.

I guess that the pre-gunpowder mercenaries who use gunpowder are wandering scholars and inventors armed with Wondrous Devices from the East...?
