Here's the scenario: I'm playing as the Saxons and I have 2 Longboats in the sea between Defnas/Sumorsaete and Ireland. The Irish have just built a Curragh which appeared in the same sea. I'm at war with them so I attack it.

My 2 Longboats, 1 attack/1 defense each, with a command of 3, were both destroyed when attacking a Curragh, 1 attack/0 defense, with a command of 1. Did the Irish discover Greek fire? Did my Longboats spontaneously combust, you know, because Longboats sometimes do that?

The only thing I can think of is that the Irish fleet attacked mine, and using their 1 attack miraculously defeated both of my Longboats. Is this another glitch or just bad luck?

This happens from time to time. Navel battles can be more than a little odd. Its not a bug or glitch just a peculiarity in the code.

The system probably (well I think) works with a percantage system like with assassins. it calculates it with the attack, valor and the defence of the boats.

You probably had a 99% chance of winning.... and a big load of bad luck http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif

This is nothing i've seen a fleet of five ships, my fleet, get wiped out with a single viking ship. And it was that basic viking ship...

This is why i would like a naval battle systems that did not rely on auto-calculate.

The boats were snekkjars right?

You would never make that happen against a drakkar (I think).

I bet it would happen with a drakkar.

I think its like Civilisation (2 at least, haven't tried 3) where you can have a battleship killed off by a phalanx...

Probably the captains of your longboats got really drunk the night before, celebrating the impending victory, when the curragh loaded with psychotic Irishmen using medieval methamphetamines performed a midnight sneak attack. It's the only logical explanation.
