http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif I have huge trouble in grouping troops. I have read the book but it doesn't seem to work. Can anyone explain numbering of groups to me?
Also I cannot get similar units to merge.
Firstly you can't merge units on the battlefield.
Second you group troops by having their icons selected and pressing g. How hard can it be? You can also select a number of units and then press 1-9 to make a group with that particular formation.
Select all cavalry with ctrl+c and all missiletroops with ctrl+m for easy grouping (edit: not to be confused with groping) http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

To assign a group number press and hold Ctrl+shift and the press the desired number between 0-9.
To select the numbered group press and hold Ctrl and then press the groupnumber (0-9).

I know what u mean, its not the group but to me the troops seem not to hold together well - AHH they lack discipline the blighters http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
Arrow:
If you group together two units that are somewhat separated on the field, they will maintain that separation. You have to group the icons and then deploy the units the way you want them.
Go into custom battles and try this. Group 2 units together (select one, then hold CTRL while you select another, then hit G)
Left click on the battlefield where you want the left flank to be, then hold the left mouse button and drag to where you want the right flank to be. You should get a 'ghost' image that gives you an idea how the units will look. The two units should be together, side by side.
Left click on the battlefield and they move together.
Now, Alt-left click ahead somewhere, and the units will go to that spot and face the same way as when they started.
Alt-right-click and hold and you should get a ghost image as your units 'wheel' about.
No, add more units. Select two infantry units. Deploy as above. Now select two archer/pav units. Deploy in front of (or behind) your two inf. Now group all four together. Try to move them around as above.

Yes I see what u mean, they just seem to get tangled in the heat of battle,
Do you find the standard formation buttons work well?
