View Full Version : Organizing Shogun MP

Most people on this forum know that the best time to play Shogun online is at 7-8 pm GMT. On sundays there is no problem finding games but it is very hard the rest of the week. 7-8 pm is pretty general and there are people online at many other times during the day. For example, it's summer vacation for me so I m often online at 2-3 pm. The problem with a time range this general is that no one wants to sit and wait in the foyer for very long and so it is possible for dozens of people to check into the foyer in this time period and not see anyone else there http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif . I would like to suggest an organized approach to solving this problem. Post what time(s) you plan on going online tomorrow in this thread and I will edit this post and put your name and time in it. I will update this post each day. If people know that someone is planning on turning up at a certain time they will be willing to wait in the foyer. If enough people post regularly in this thread it will be much easier to get a game. As I understand it, EDT is five hours behind GMT in UK right now.

Besides the sunday meeting there is also a meeting on saturdays at 9:00 pm EDT.

Sunday, August 17
Mimesaka Akechi(AKA Shinano)- 7:00-10:00
Celtlan--
Mori Zennousha-- ? Please post
General Malaise--1:00 am GMT

Everone else please post too, even if it is only for one day that you will be online. If you are a Junior patron and can't post in this forum then post it in the Entrance hall and I will move it here. If you don't have an account at the Org, please register and post if you want more people online in Shogun.

Quote[/b] ]Hi guys The Ugli's have decided to go back and play the old MI/WE game since most are not crazy about the MTW/VI game. We are playing once a week, saturdays at 9pm eastern standard time. The WE/MI lobby is still running as of this post. We invite all the wolves, and anyone else who wants to join in the fun. We will be using the last official patch, v1.02 I believe, and also the v1.03 stats. Hope to see you guys there UglyElmo

Hi,

This was a recent post at the Wolf site, thought it might help you, as they are also from USA, try posting at their forums.

weekends well ill be on and off any time between 9 and 11 and 3 till 6 if anyone wants a game email me to let me know and ill make sure i log in and stay there or ill just check here http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Loved that 2v3 we had Shinano. Now that was what I call tactics lol even if I did wait doing nothing for most of the time the joy of the final charge breaking the lines with fresh units was fun http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/pat.gif

Oh GMT is currently set one hour behind British summer time. Please remember this and adjust acordingly. My times are set to GMT from the site above.

Yes, that was one of the best big battles I've had online. Lots of fun partly because it went so slow.

Ok just for me and say it slowly...........
Where is EST in relation to GMT????? how many hours behind?

And someone explain how in Greenwich (ok sp i know) you can look at your watch and its an hour ahead of GMT in the summer time.

A bear of very little brain today http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/dizzy.gif

greetings, Celtlan et al...

anyone, please feel free to correct me if i'm wrong, but here's my understanding of EST vs GMT:
EST (Eastern Standard Time) is GMT - 5 hours... so, 8:00 pm GMT = 3:00 pm EST...

however, we are currently in EDT (Eastern Daylight Time), which is GMT - 4 hours, to make up for the "spring forward" thing we do every year.... so, 8:00 pm GMT = 4:00 pm EDT... hope this info proves useful...

as for me, i'm currently in a non-working mode (heh, heh), so i'm pretty much looking for a game whenever i can get one... i'll keep checking this thread for times to find you folks in the Foyer, and will keep checking in accordingly... generally speaking, though, at least for a while, i'm up for a game just about any time, EDT, GMT, whatever...

see y'all there,
Z

Mori: It would help if you could post some specific times and make sure you are on at that time. It would help other people find a game with you if they had a precise time to check on.

Greetings Mimesaka,

well, here's my deal: i'm not working currently and have tons of spare time on my hands, so i've been trying to pick up on when others are there and just showing up at those times... for example, i've been checking in regularly this week at 6:00pm GMT (2:00pm EDT), like today, and have had pretty good luck finding folks there... i'm never totally sure when i'll be on (being in EDT makes it tough for a night-owl like myself; normally i'd just be getting fully awake at 9:00 or 10:00, heh, heh)... but how about this: aside from the other times already in this thread, i'll make an effort to be on every night at 9:00pm EDT (1:00am GMT)... who knows, maybe there are others like myself that are up late with STW... i'll keep checking this thread for updates...

OK, 'til next time,
Z

Zen Good map last night enjoyed that and looking forward to trying the others.

As far as hosting goes I did have a problem to start with as well. It could be something to do with Firewalls, managed to get mine configured to sort out the problem so I can host but some ISPs dont let games be hosted through them It could be that. Firewall wise i think you can allow certain IP addresses to be allowed but dont know what the STW WE server address is myself.

Anyone else know the IP address?

Mon to friday next week will be on later in the evenings will post to advise on a day to day basis.

Just a quick nudge, does anyone find this listing of times useful? It seems to be just the three of us although there certainly seems to be more people around than when i was first going into the server in an evening. Please post to at least say its useful to you.

Thanks

Konnichiwa Celtlan san....

glad you liked the map.... and yeah, we'll try a couple of the others as well...

i've looked into the hosting problem, and there are a number of possible issues, none of which is firewall related, unfortunately... i'm using a router with NAT, which may be too big a hurdle in itself.... worse still, my ISP is Verizon DSL, which uses PPPoE (dynamic, to put it mildly), so even with the router removed, i still may/will have problems hosting games... in short, i may be SOL with the DSL (heh, heh... ahem)

do you know anything about dyndns? i'm looking into it as a possible work-around, but am concerned about the speeds... i know it works for people running servers with dynamic IP's and NAT routers, but realtime speed is not such an issue for things like FTP transfers... if it makes the game any more laggy than it already is, it would hardly be worth the trouble

anyway, i'll be on today around 6:00 GMT... perhaps i'll see you there...

'til next time,
Z

Mori Zennousha,

Routers with NAT do stop hosting stw/we/mi/mtw/vi games because the joiners have to be able to ping the host machine since the battles are peer-to-peer. The host is the server for the battle, and all the joiners must be able to see the host's ip address which is what the NAT is designed to prevent. I don't know what dyndns is, but there is not much data going back and forth between the machines in a battle, so if dyndns tunnels through the NAT it might work. A tunneling protocol that I looked at required that every machine have it installed.

Right now I'm going to try the Saturday 9 pm EDT slot and see how that works out. I'll probably arrive early as will Elmo if he can. Both he and I can host big 4v4 games.

Mimesaka,

i'm going to try to throw in the 9:00pm saturday night meeting mentioned earlier in this thread by Kansuke (it says 9:00pm EST, so depending on daylight savings time, that would be 1:00-2:00am GMT, neh?)... also, will definately try to make the usual samsunday 7:00-8:00pm GMT meetings...

bows,
Z

Konnichiwa, Mimesaka et al...

listen, i had a thought concerning this thread; if it's not too much of a hassle, what do you think about adding who can and can't host to the list of times people are online? who knows, it may encourage people who are able to host games to show up... if they're the only ones who can host, they're sure to get some playing time, neh?

anyway, just a thought (FWIW, i still am unable to host... but i'm still working on it)

*bows*

I have added hosting information as per your suggestion.

I thought about trying to figure out how to host myself but since I only understood 1 word in 5 in your discussion with Kraellin I decided to give it up.

Just making sure: FWIW = For What It's Worth http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

Mori Zennousha
07-03-2003, 15:12
cool... hopefully that will help those who can and those who can not host to get together more often...

let me ask you this, Mimesaka: what kind of ISP are you using (DSL, Cable, Dial-up, etc?), and are you using a router (switch, hub, etc?)??? also, what, if any firewall are you running? (BTW, feel free to email me with this stuff if you don't want it posted in the Forum)... who knows, perhaps your problems aren't that bad... it's definately worth looking into...

and yes, FWIW = "for what it's worth"

ok, m8, hope you have a great afternoon... i'll be looking for you in the foyer in a bit...
Sayonara,
Z

This thread has been very succesful in some ways, I have played lots of games with the two people who posted in it...however only two people posted in it. It's too much bother to update it every day so I'm just going to let it slip into oblivion. If you want a game and see that I'm on the forum just PM me and say so http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif .

Sasaki Kojiro
07-18-2003, 21:18
It seems it was more succesful than I had thought http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/eek.gif

Since abandoning it I have noticed a decrease in the number of people online http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif . So I am going to start updating it again, hopefully more people will post and they will continue to edit their posts with the times when they will be on.

There are still plenty of people playing STW:MI online, usually around 15 at a time on sundays. There are quite often 9 or 10 people online on saturdays but usually only 4 or 5 on weekdays. Best time is 7:00-10:00 GMT.

Ok times for this week will be

Tuesday 6pm till 7pm GMT
Rest of week is looking bad though what with parents visiting, birthday, holiday and other general hassels. I will post more as I can though. Will make a special effort for Tuesday.

DarkLegend: I understand your frustration but there is really no need for 8 posts when you only needed one. When I was first starting to play online I was annoyed at not being able to find games on my time, so I started this thread. Eventually I discovered that the only time I could find games was from 7:00 to 10:00 current british time. This is 2:00-5:00 EDT so I guess for you it is 12:00 to 3:00 (?). I will be online at that time today. If you have some other time of day you would like to play, post it here and I will tell you if I can make it at that time.

Hello all,

I just got the expansion pack for STW recently and started playing up again (since I never had a decent connection before) but I find that no one is ever in the MP game foyer. If you'd be interested in playing you can e-mail me at chris11884@juno.com or message me on AIM under "Null End Void", and we could set up some times, maybe even get a clan going. I would be posting this in the Sword Dojo, but as I'm not a Senior member, I'm stuck sticking it here. Hopefully, some of you will see it though. Look forward to battling with you all.

I'm making Tenki into a strong Shogun clan, of course it'll have to play MTW but I won't, can't be bothered to spend all day everyday learning all the imbalances that plague the game like some people have (*cough's in the direction of the 24/7 MTW players*).

Konnichiwa, Great Lords of the Shoggy Realm...

it is i, Mori Zennousha, returned from a most impromptu hiatus... my apologies for my sudden disappearance; matters beyond my control caused me to leave home unexpectedly, and upon my return i found that the wa of my computer's kami had been severely disturbed... this has been remedied, though my hosting ablilities will doubtlessly be in question from time to time...

regardless, i have returned, and though rusty from lack of battle, i'm ready to enter the fray once more... i would ask that, if it's not a great inconvenience, someone get me up to speed on any developments, if there are any i should be aware of...

as it is, Celtlan, Mimesaka, Tosa, Sora, GaiJin, and any others i forgot to mention, i hope to see you all soon on the battlefield... 'til then,
