The Long way 'round

Playing VI expansion patch in GA mode as Spain, I cannot get Crusades to go North from the Iberian Peninsula. They are only allowed to go south through my conquered N.Africa, or through the Byz, Turks, and Egyptians to the Mid East. I've got shipped stretched to the Eastern end of the Med, yet cannot go straight to Tripoli or Antioch.

However, this doesn't seem to apply to the English, who drain my troops, then use my ships to make a beeline for the juicy provinces.

Is this a bug?

I can only propose, that enemy shipping block your crusade when it starts. I read here sometime, that when you first decide to go by land (as opposed to taking a boat) you're bound by that decision until you get there, so you can't walk some of the way and then take a boat later. You can take a boat right from the start though.
