Personally I like AoK the most, though it's tied with Stronghold.
Age of Empires 2: the Age of Kings (AoK) is just such an addictive game, and great for scenario designers Stronghold is another great game, especially if you like castle building (though sadly it's 2d so the castle designs are somewhat limited). Whenever I see an interesting castle, I rebuild it in Stronghold.

I'll leave strategy games alone for now, and concentrate on the more action-y games.

I personally love the No One Lives Forever series. Great first-person-shooters with a sense of humour, and the graphics in the second game are brilliant, with facial animation especially good. Also, what other game could feature weapons like the Banana, Mascara Stun Gun, Angry Kitty Proximity Mine, or the cigarette-lighter welder? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Another first-person shooter, Battlefield 1942, is one of my favourites. It's a great game (I play only in single-player, as my internet connection is crap), and it really conveys the feeling of war. I love being an infantryman; tanks are simply an encumbrance that can be taken down with a few well-placed grenades, bazooka rockets, anti-tank gun shells, explosive packs, or land mines.

IL-2 Sturmovik: Forgotten Battles is the finest flight sim known to man. It's one of the few flight simulators that I actually enjoyed, and it's great fun to carry out aerobatics in a nimble fighter, before being a turret gunner on a Heinkel bomber.

The Monkey Island series are great Can't wait for the next one and of course Sam & Max 2 which is due out next year
I agree with Mechstra on IL-2, I don't have Forgotten Battles (yet) but the original IL-2 is also a brilliant flight simulator. And if you want to give Flight Simulation a try it is a budget title so give it a try

In Action titles I really enjoyed NOLF2 and I loved Mafia, that is one hell of a game At the moment I am really into Rainbow Six: Raven Shield which is also a very good game (online AND offline). I also enjoyed Splinter Cell very much

Can't say one of these is the best though, all depends on the mood you're in, how much time you got on your hands etc... A good game for me is a game that sucks you up, a game that doesn't let you go until you've completed it

Europa Universalis II (although im still pissed at them for not making Portugal a default choice in the big campaing like it was in EU I), Age of empires series, X-com series, Master of orion I and 2, civilization series... there are so many to choose from and i can't pick one.

But the game i played the most since it was of my first games in my old AMD p-75 at 133MHZ (what a machine huh?) was Warcraft 2. I really loved those orcs...

Freedom Force is a fun game (superheroes in the 60's fighting commies). Atm I play some championship manager 4 too (where they are working on the 4th patch now, and the game still has more bugs than even VI http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/dizzy.gif ).

Morrowind and BG2 are best for rpg'ing.

The thief series (that's where I get my name from) is fantastic. First person sneakery with plenty of atmosphere. If the third one isn't outstanding I shall be very disapointed.

No one lives for ever is also an excellent series and a close second to thief IMO. It demonstrates how to do comedy properly, how to do a female character properly (note Cate is realistically proportioned, wearing clothes, doesn't whinge about lipstick, has a brain and still looks great. I've never seen anyone who doesn't like this character.) and how to do a story based first person shooter. The second adds to the mix with hints of RPG and stealth. I was rather upset to hear that Cate will not be the star of the expansion, I shall miss her one liners. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif For all those who can appreciate it Do you want to buy a monkey? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif

To those who mentioned Monkey Island-very true of the first three games but the forth was horrible. It wasn't funny and it broke several of LucasArts rules which always made point 'n' clicks fun. Remember that http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mad.gif swamp with the mixed up directions where you went back to the beginning if you got lost and had to keep watching that dull cutscene over and over? That's an example of the breaking of rule Do Not Irritate The Player By Making Them Repeat Dull Stuff If They Make A Slight Mistake. A tragic demise of a great series and a great type of game. For the record I also hated Grim Fandango and don't hold much hope for Sam and Max 2 even if the original was one of my favourites.

The age of empire series. D@mn I had a lot of fun with those games when I was a little 10 year old boy (ok I'm still little http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif ) It was my second strategy game and I can't think of an other game I enjoyed so much.

I also played diablo 2 to death http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif ,and Morrowind, although not as much as diablo.

Cossacks is great to.

And let's not forget about homeworld, I'm realy looking forward to homeworld2.

Now I'm playin Morrowind again and I'm planing on finishing the game this time. I'll probably be busy with it until Rome and Homeworld 2 come out

Otherwise....
Strategy: Alpha Centauri, Civ 2
Tactics: X-COM: UFO Defense, X-COM: Terror from the Deep, StarCraft
Shooters and similar: Counterstrike, Operation Flashpoint
RPG: Neverwinter Nights
Adventure: Grim Fandango
Other: IL-2 Sturmovik (prefer the original to Forgotten Battles)

I forgot the Thief games They really are brilliant. I bought the original when it came out, and although I never bought the second (not enough cash), I have high hopes for the new Thief. A whole city, every building enterable, functioning neighbourhoods, and a main storyline GTA in pseudo-medieval times can only be amazing.

Actually, I enjoyed the fourth installment. Not as much as the earlier games, but it was a decent adventure game, one of a dying breed. Grim Fandango is the game that I regard as the pinnacle of Lucasarts' greatness. Its dry humour, and Glottis the demon driver just make it a joy to play. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif Year 2 (Rubacava) is the best-thought-out puzzle sequence ever.

I guess I should have explained better why I didn't like monkey 4 and grim fandango. I was a massive point 'n' click fan back in the day but when they went 3d the genre died. The controls for all the LucasArts games went from simplicity to a horribly inaccurate 3d movement system. I found that I was running around the items I was trying to pick up. It was also hard to tell where a 'hot spot' was because you couldn't search the screen with the cursor looking for the text pop ups.

I didn't like the 3d graphics as much as they felt much less 'hand drawn' than the 2d games. They still looked good but the charm was missing. Monkey 3 had the best 'look' out of all the LucasArts classics closely followed by day of the tentacle and Sam and Max.

They also broke their own rules about not annoying the player by forcing them to watch cutscenes over and over if they made a mistake. They made you back track on occasions to collect more of an item if you failed enough times, for some reason I can remember chasing pretzels in grim fandango for several days, I can't remember why I needed them though. LucasArts did actually have a set of written rules of what not to do in their point 'n' clicks, these rules made them better than the competition who insisted on killing players and other daft things.

Which brings me to another thing I found disapointing - so much of what you were doing was forgettable. I can still remember what happened in the first 3 monkey islands, the dig, sam and max, day of the tentacle and many others. I can only remember a handful of moments from monkey and grim.

The worst thing was that they were no longer funny. I could have lived with all the crap I hated if they were funny. The 2d ones had me laughing so much I felt sick but grim fandango didn't raise so much as a smile and monkey 4 was so pathetic I couldn't believe it was from the same series as the first three. Now a days if I want funny I play No One Lives Forever.

The 3d revolution killed the genre. point 'n' clicks were turned into adventure games just to keep up with the quakes of the gaming world. After all 2d is crap right? It's so last decade.

I hope this doesn't sound like too much of a rant but I have years of frustration pent up. I have seen these games getting awards, good reviews and being called better than the older games when to me this is just not the case. I respect the fact that other people like the new genre but why did they have to kill off the 2d games to create it? I guess it's like turn based games - they have been mostly killed off by RTS, although the genre is clinging on (Age of Wonders 1+2 are a good example)

On topic - System shock 2 should be on the list. I played that when it first came out and it still gives me nightmares. Imagine the scene.....

frogbeastegg sneaks through the corridors of medical clutching a wrench when she hears

Or the midwives and their friendly I'll rip out your spine spoken in a dull monologue sounding so bored as they shoot lasers at you. Even worse is when they say meat is good for the young ones, the meat being your dead body and the young ones being the alien freaks that created the part woman, part machine monstrosity. Of course you can't talk shock without mentioning shodan and her look at you insect speeches. She really scares me http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif

Oh, and I mustn't forget the monkeys, God they are scary. And the protocol droids where are you, I can't help you if I can't find you sir. When they find you they batter you to death while wishing you a nice day...

System shock 2 is the only game that has ever scared me. I can find no higher praise of its atmosphere than that. I introduced a friend to it and he's so scared he can't get passed the door with the ghost in MedSci http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif

If I recall, the pretzels were in Monkey 4, not Grim Fandango.

System Shock 2 Now there's a game to send shivers down your spine. I played the demo, and it is very scary. The fact that you can hear the hybrids before you see them, groaning and calling for you, while the only weapon you have is a puny crowbar or pistol, really puts the fear of God into a man. And your first glimpse of a hybrid is when a crew member runs past, screaming, on the other side of an unbreakable window, and the hybrid stomps after her, stops, and pumps shotgun shells into the woman when she's out of sight. Later, you come across the woman with the hybrid bent over her, menacingly. Ooh, I need to play that game again.

Ultima Online (quitted playing it however some month ago...)
Civilization III
Close Combat Series (except Part V)

I still use AoK:TC for designing and playing scenarios. In my opinion, it massively extends the lifetime of the game. Try visiting Age of Kings Heaven (http://aok.heavengames.com)'s Blacksmith section for some very good user-created campaigns and scenarios. I recommend Ulio by Ingo van Thiel.

And if you're interested in AoK or Stronghold (or Age of Mythology, or Empire Earth, or Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds); there is Woad Creations (http://www.woadcreations.nl), a scenario design team (which, incidentally, I lead). American conquest is quite good. If you liked cossacks (the first in the series)you will like this. Basically it follows the age of empire model but X10. You get resources by the thousands, troops by the hundred etc. You also use resources better eg coal and iron are needed for gunpowder units to fire so if you run out you're in trouble. Units often have both ranged and melee attacks. It's reasonably historically accurate (I think, I'm not American) and the graphics are nicely detailed. It has both campaign and skirmish modes to mess around in. Troop control is very good, you place individual soldiers into formations which you then order around. If you like details AC has plenty eg standard bearers, officers, cannon crews etc. You can play as both the native and the Europeans but the natives are a bit crap and there are only a few European civs. Unfortunately the ships are pretty crap as well (canoes beat big battleships? ), navel combat was one of the things cossacks did really well.

It's fun but not a patch on Total War. There's a demo around somewhere but it's a poor demo IMO, the actual game is much better.

Is that related to the film Critters?

Because I'd pay to see that, especially if we could feed Sir Cliff to 'em before the match http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif

Thanks
Bryans
American Conquest sucks if you ask me.

A big waste of money.

No real improvement on Cossaks, in fact i enjoyed cossaks more. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/eek.gif

and with indains able to build warriors at a huge rate and use peasants to fight it just turns into a big mall in the middle with no tactics. d it : :
I tend to disagree, I think AC is a great game (or at least could have been) but CDV just doesn't seem to have any interest in patching it at all. But the game itself is beautiful.....

here's a link if you're interested: American Conquest (http://www.americanconquest.com/english)

Well, EU2.

And that's all...

BTW, if the campaign is not at least as interesting as EU2, I am very likely to limit myself to MP battle in RTW.

By interesting I mean;
- real diplomatic engine
- to be in a province does not mean having it (well, might be ok in RTW, but ridiculous in MTW)
- neat historic events (right now, who cares?)
- more generic army, and less of a complete patchwork of whatever is available.

Louis the Simurgh,

Edit; and if it is for MP only, MP mode better be good and bugless.
