Ive noticed in the WE campaign the AI is more likely to withdraw if you have a superior army -- rather than do a suicide charge like in the days of old.

Unfortunately, this has been carrying over to a few custom battles as well HAHA

I just tried to play 3 defenses of Castle 4d and all three times the AI withdrew from battle when he got close enough to see what units I had. The first two times we both went on "random units" so I figured I'd give him a good army to attack me with on the third try and I'd take random. I guess he wasnt satisfied with what I gave because he withdrew again LOL. So much for practicing castle defense http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

I've also found that. It doesn't take much to rout the armies now. If there's plenty of fog and you hide in some trees, they'll sometimes rout without even having laid eyes on you!
