when allies help each other out in attacking a province, the place goes to whichever ally has the biggest army.
in your case, the Welsh had the bigger force, so he got awarded the territory. But since it was an island, there was no way for your own army to retreat (either a port or you owning an adjacent territory), so they were all captured.
Seems to me that this is a bug. Shouldn't you be allowed to retreat if your ally has taken the province. It's not like they would stop you from boarding your ships. Just my opinion http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

if you have no neighboring province, and there's no dock for your men to leave by sea, how and where would you retreat?
next time you invade, and an ally helps you out, withdraw before the battle if you think this will happen.
I understand the problem in terms of the game mechanics, but in trying to relate it to the "real" world it just seems too unreasonable to me that the victorious army would become prisoners of the army that was just defeated. Is there an exception when the province has a port, then can the invading army retreat from an allied province? Do the allies allow your army to board your own ships at the port for the purpose of retreating? Just wondering http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

yes.
As the man said - if you get "help" by a force bigger than your own you have two viable options - withdraw (and hope that your ally loses) or break the alliance and betray your ally on the field. Btw it's the size of the army at the beginning of the battle that decides who gets the province after the fight.

But why do your allies demand a ransom - they are allies
Playing france I lifted a sicilian siege of an italian (allied) castle but he itys got the province and then had the gall to ask me for a ransom, including my five star heir http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/pissed.gif
I just saved their kings bacon and it really pissed me off. Needless to say I got excommed and the Ity king met his maker
Oh, I guess I was confused, it's the victorious allies who demand ransom if you are the third party in the province. That's interesting, is there some historical precedence for this behaviour?
