View Full Version : Attatchment to armies

This may sound a bit daft but has anyone here ever had a sort of attatchment to any of the men in your army? I had a unit of Heavy Cavalry attacked in both flanks by YS and they were wiped out but for one man. He stayed with me for ages, always fighting on his own, and eventually reached honour 7. He was rock hard. Then in one battle I was being attacked and he fell among the many dead on the field. I was shocked and heartbroken and despite winning the battle quite convincingly, I replayed it just so I could see he was ok.

Well, I might someday develop an attachment to that geisha...

I've had similar situations like your Chauncy, though I would describe it as "kepoing a watchful eye on a soldier" rather than attachement. It was a lone monk, who also achieved honor 7 until he fell in a castle seige. It was a bit flat; when he died his tile just blipped out and I was sorta hoping to get a little more fanfare upon his demise. Alas, his death was announced in the same asuetere method as the lowliest ashigaru.

I have never gotten attached to armies, nor to individual men... but I have gotten attached to a specific unit. In fact - I used them throughout one campaign as my spearhead - almost like a Free Corps legion. They were YC, and invariably, many would fall in valient battle, but the Corps would live on and retrain - gaining recruits. After a time, the average honor got high enough where only a few casualties were incurred in almost any situation. Then - they be came juggernaughts... Max armor, max weapons and max morale on a straight honor 5 YC unit - under a general that gave them an additionial +3 to honor... They became the most feared single unit in all of Japan. It was almost sad when, in the final battle, they charged into a castle and destroyed the last Diamyo and his remaining rabble. I could almost picture the few remaining original men, sitting on their horses looking at each other with the smile of knowing that it was over, and they could return home, yet also feeling sorry that the last battle had been fought.

I sometimes get 'attached' to the Kensi general in my legendary Kensi armies.

Fight first, then scream 'Doh, why did I forget my Kensi!'
I had a super bad ninja once that had never failed in assassination. He had even killed a geisha (which I thought was impossible)and a daimyos heir. He got his though when I tried to assassinate said heirs pappa.. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/frown.gif
Indeed I develop such attachments with great frequency. They tend not to be particularly emotional recently.. I have played WAAY to many wargames to get really attached.

I get attached to Corps...Usegi Kenshin's 4 Spearman units were my 'elite' in one campaign, and I was sad when it was time to commit them to the attack, I didn't - and lost...much like Napoleon's Imperial guard, a good thing, and a bad thing...
I'm currently playng a Mori game on the 'Japan's Darkest Days' scenario - I have 6 monk units with legendary everything, however...I have lost my Monastary and in that game you cannot build Monastries, an ever shrinking band of holy warriors at the center of the Defence against invading Mongols...I feel 'safe' when I have them in a battle - easily the best troops on any battlefield, with their upgrades and honour MHC do not stand a chance...
I can't wait for crusaders though, you can lead your elite troops across europe - I can see myself getting far more attached to Templar Cavalry, Longbowmen, or even elite Janisaries than even the Greatest Kensai, however thats just probably because of my historical interests http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

Well I have to simpathise with those Yari Cavalry guys, it really did sound like a wipe the tears away moment with stiring orchestral music in the backround and a rather tasty sunset. I fell kinda bad that you finished the game and had to let it all stop.
