I like the Mercians in Viking, the Byz in High, and the Spanish in Late. But which faction has the best troops in the Early Era?
Does any faction have a clear advantage?
An unfair advantage?
Italians have good infantry, the Byz have VG, the Russians (Novgorod) have Boyars, the Danes have Vikings, the Mulsims have good horse archers and infantry.
Wha d'ya think?

Yes Cheetah is right. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif Hungary is very good, I personally like the Russians, or Novgorod...whatever. They have Rus Spearmen in early, wait I hate them....always run. Ok, well they have Boyars, and they're enough for me, so Hungary and Russia. I'm way too tired of the Byzantines to use them.

I think the People of Novgorod, Hungary or the Elmoheads as they now has Arab Infantry which are very good (with armour upgrades http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif )

Tired of them was not the question...Byz have the best infintry (and its a 100 man unit too) V Guard have excellent morale/combat ability with armor bonus, byz cav have the dual ability of being cav archers and combat cav.
Saying that they are the best is easy/ that they are also unbalanced is also easy, else people would not host "no byz" games...

I would say Barneys get the icing sugar here.
Myself i like the russians.Rus spearmen good unit.The boyers are very good,and steepe cavalry is a good unit to run down them routing men.
Interesting responses.
I intentionally left Hungary off the list, hoping to get a post from a Hungary fan, and Cheetah came thru in style.
Compare with Louis/smurf/Simurgh thread about lies and stats. He has some very interesting observations.

I don't like them mostly because a v3 unit of Byz Inf are almost always going to beat a v3 unit of fmaa, and possibly even a v3 unit of cmaa...which cost a few hundred florins more, that is, if you attack them head-on. This is a direct advantage that is of course exploited by people, and why wouldn't they? I would as well if I picked them. Just like lahll said, that along with the V. Guards is a very effective combo, but it can be beaten of course. Then they've got exclusive use of some good cavs as well.

I guess we could redo an analysis of the stats per florin. IIRC it was already done and arrived to the conclusion that barneys get most stat for florin. EDIT: in early era.

Play the Danes, when u are them u are unstopable, u get so many A++++++ generals created at 2 star 7 peity 8 loyalty, its unbeliveable.
Hm, valor 3 byz.inf is good for only 1 fight. After that it is close to useless. The real strentgh of byz are the cav units: byz cav and byz lancers. However, other factions have better cavs (for example Hungary http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif). So, when you fight a byz player go cav heavy and be sure to win the cav battle on the flanks. That is it. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

make byz inf 60 man and they are pretty well balanced.
At reasonable cost they are 6 att 8 def, compared to their counterpart CMAA 7, 7. My favorite faction in early is hungary for all their archers, but the strongest is still prolly byz. Altough a 2max rule makes them less so.

Byz is the strongest in the early. In a 15k game you can get 4 v4 byz inf, 4 v2 guardsmen, 2 Karph, 3 lancers. Use your cav to soak up an enemy cav charge then move in an infantry unit to finish the fight. Also the biggest advantage to byz is that the loss of your general unit won't affect the morale of most of your fighting troops, this makes him great bait and usefull in the front lines.
