Hi all.

First the comment.

I just finished my first campaign. Finished it in 1453, heh. I had a 60% victory around the mid 1200's, but then my king produced 6 daughters and no sons and after his death my empire went into chaos. The problem is that after I put down all the fires, I still had revolts almost every turn on the whole european right side of the map. Basically every province starting with Kiev revolted every other turn. I had to juggle troops from province to province for the last 150 years of my game, until about the last 10 turns. Every 5-6 years or so, I had 0 loyalty in 4-5 provinces in that region too, so revolts were unavoidable no matter how I shifted my troops. This all caused me to lose big time florins and I played for about 70-80 years with a negative balance of over 50K. And of course every time my king died I had massive revolts since the new one wound up somewhere next to Portugal, thereby being in the corner of my empire.... *sigh*. In any case, I know about the AI making it difficult for you once you're basically in control of the map, but this is a very cheesy way to do it and is damn annoying, not to mention time consuming. I was playing the English on Norm, btw.

Well, it was nice to get that off my chest ;-)

Now for the question: Does the metalsmith upgrade ranged weapon damage or is it just the melee damage of those same archers?

Metalsmiths have no effect on ranged damage, but it will make your archers better in melee.

I usually stop the game at 60% to avoid the unpleasantness you're talking about. It's a lot of hassle. Keep your king in a centrally placed coastal province for best results.

I do keep my king in the center, but when he dies and is replaced by a new king, the new king's placement is not up to me, and that is when all hell breaks loose. I might follow your 60% suggestion though :-).

Thx for the answer to my question.

The new ruler is placed in a province which has the biggest number of buildings. Use spies in addition to garrisons to boost lyalty, as well as loyalty boosting buildings in new and far away provinces, such as border forts, religious buildings, and town militias. Also, you shoudl control the seas by now, so just place him ina province with the port. The distance to the king is calculated on the basis of how many turns would it take him to get to the province, so many of them would be counted as reachable in one turn via ships if he's in a coastal one. The more turns the province is away from him, the worse loyalty is going to be. Also, some provinces are naturally rebelious, which you'll discover by experience, and these need more of an attention, since rebellions actually spread from province to province. You may also keep an eye on your taxes, so that they are not set too high.

Hi all of you.

In order to conquer all provinces, i have to say that one of the most important things is WINNIG ALL BATTLES. I you lose a battle, it's like if all the people say: Hey, he's weak , let's revolt and that's not good. Also, you must often build some, and the farmlands improves.

Doug's answer to everything: Play Muslims.

I have never had a ruler die without leaving a male heir, playing as a Muslim.

Granted, I've not played as many games as most folks on this forum. However, shall we just say that having a harem seems to have serious practical advantages extending beyond the recreational?

Muslims don't get excommunicated, either. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

No... they have a sort of permanent excumunication all cruzades landing everywhere. Lot of fun though http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif

You are right about heirs, muslims get lots of them, from different wifes i presume http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Ah, but that's what Jihads are for. I haven't tried it yet, but have heard that multiple Jihads launched upon the same province are loads of fun.
