View Full Version : So playing hard makes royal knights more powerful?

So it makes the kings and princes more powerful as all other units have halve their usual number.
No point upgrading to get better knights then. Just go royal palace all the way and built a stack of all royals. They can toss aside spears easier now that there are only 50 of them.
Dumb idea to make the game harder. Also some kings tend to breed alot this makes them all the more powerful.
I remember once in normal diff, I left Elmo on that worthless piece of land to the left of Egypt, they ended up with a stack of Prince Ghulams as they have no money for other units. And invaded my land, I held them off with spearmen, now on hard diff they can trash my units. Eventhough they cost half, its better to have larger numbers in a unit.
To counter that I guess I have to go royal too.
Bah Think I'll play normal instead if I have to impose a non-royal penalty on myselfjust to make hard easir.

Units are smaller in hard? I just started a hard campaign with the Italians and unit sizes are as they are supposed to be (set on large). Don`t know if I get what you mean. Playing on hard can be annoying cause you can get such strange battle results.
I`ve changed most cav units to 60 men (default size), so Royals are less effective.

While it is true that you get a small bonus with this in lower unit sizes, remember most of the cost accociated with these units is unpkeep & support anyway. In the grand scheme of thins it makes little difference and I'd personally rather have a more epic game than an easier one.

Silly me, it was the unit size that was causing it. The current campaign was using the old unit size if I reloaded it.
So I got confused, hmm.
Anyway a unit of 40 knights can take down a unit of 20 royals.

Present campaign with the Hungarians I got in a battle with the french...no surprise. My chiv knights slam into some feudal spears. The french follow up with the general's unit (urban militia) and I charge into those with chiv sergeants. Even with a relief attack by halberds all units are trashed...that wasn't fatal. More of my halberds into his only chiv sergeant. Chiv seargents can sometimes turn into vicious killing machine because they have high defence and the survival rating is good. In this way they get much battle experience and with some valour to compensate for the lack of morale they are a force to be reckoned with. Any way, what is your opinion on halbardiers? I don't use them much, but that's perhaps because i got used to not using them and got with other units.
Halberdiers are okay assault infantry, but they are slow, tire easily, and are not very archer friendly. Against light-medium, and sometimes heavy cavalry, they are very effective. I still prefer units such as Chivalric MaA for my general purpose work; the halberdiers are too specialized for me.

Of course you like them ;-). They're probably the best defensive units in the game (not counting ranged units). The only weakness I've been able to find in them is that they tire almost immediately in the desert, but even when exhausted they are very strong. The regular swiss pikemen are good too.

Not if you're playing patched. Before 1.1, you could build them in other provinces, but not any more.

I used to despise halberds. To some extent I still think you get better value out of militia sergeants.
I'm not sure how I became hooked on halberds http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif Building them in an iron-rich province with armour and weapon upgrades they seem to be pretty unbeatable...or so I thought. The ones trashed in the battle were silver armour and 2nd weapon upgrade.
They do shine on defence. When the enemy is coming to you, its easy to get them in the right spot.

I really like halberdiers. They are slow, ok, but their advantage is they can stand against nearly every other unit and aren`t expansive. If used defensively, the enemy has to attack them, which means trouble cause anything you send on them will have heavy losses. But I also use them offensively. Eventhough they are slow, they still get where I send them to and can be helpfull to break through the enemy lines.
Archers aren`t that much of a problem, thanks to their heavy armour. Crossbows and arbs are deadly for them, though.
