View Full Version : Moving and shooting arrows!
I really miss one big thing in this game, or should i say; i want to change one thing in the game.
The arrow system... first off i kinda think the archers aim like s**t in close range.
And if you want players to train varius types of horse archers, then they have to change the way the behave.
Take the Mongols och the Huns for exampel... irl they used the tactic off riding and shooting in the same time, and they where really damn good at it. In the game you have to stand still and shoot and i kinda think that sux.
I really hopes that this will be changed for Rome TW... i wonna be able just to tell my horse archers to ride around and shoot like maniacs.
sorry if i misspelled anything... hehe well im a swede... so... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Archers work great, You must be missing something if your having problems.
Personally I say deploy them only two men deep (any more and the back rows get an accuracy penalty) and always make sure you have support nearby... Archers, while being powerful cannot decimate a unit on their own, and without Melee support they can be cut to shreds.
I always say you should have some spearmen nearby so your archers can fall back behind them and continue to shoot at the enemy.

3 rows in a loose formation I heard... 2 in a close one.

you can also arrange your archers in a wedge.
but anyway the Org community had this discussion in depth back when the game was Shogun Total War, and after a long and heated debate....well, the conclusion eludes me.
you might be able to find more info by asking the multiplayer regulars, or checking the archives.
i prefer usnig horse archers or the longbowman...only inf i would touch as bow is the ones who got sword etc to back themselves up as i seen that most arrows aint very effective http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

The unability of all horse archer units to fire arrows while on the move is a big minus on realism. Heard its due to the game engine so its not CA havent thought of this before. The archers to me seems to be working just fine though... i am taking the english and longbowmans in 3 rows on high gnds always a good way to soften up the enemy...if u line up 3 to 4 units of longbowers into a colume one after another...the rate tt enemy falls dead is quite fast actually By the time u throw in ur combat units into the weaken enemy...they usually rout after a quick melee. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
ok forget the foot-archers... it was the Horse ones that really pissed me off. I want to play as mongol and do a real mongol battle: Running around inf. and shot them down in the same time with Mongol Horse Archers.
well well i hope Rome will fix this http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/dizzy.gif

I was very disappointed when I found that horse archers have to 'park' to shoot as this kind of defeats the point. I'm not too bothered about foot archers having to stand still though as this is sensible. As lazul says maybe in Rome...
I do wish my archers were a mite more accurate, killing two men with a volley of 80 arrows is a bit poor (Vs urban militia and peasants). Maybe the archers are short sighted? I routinely got 5 or more kills per volley in Shogun so I guess the rumours of toned down archers are true. The worst kicker for archers is that they can't lead their targets when they are moving. This isn't quite so bad for the crossbow units as they have a flat trajectory.
