the germans historical campaign

ive got through milan border fort, but at carcano, i was completely oblivurated. i had a group of knights that was met immedately by 4 groups of italian infantry and 4 spearmen groups. i had 35 feudal men-at-arms, but they routed from the overwhelming numbers. this was one end of the map.

the other end saw the same desperate siutation. only 80 italian infantry and 55 feudal knights and a a bunch of near to useless archers and Xbowmen against a larger superior force of cavalry and men-at-arms

PLease help what kind of tactic should i use?

I finished that campaign and the others too, although I can't recall each setting anymore, so it would help to tell us more info. There are some mission that have a trick to them, mostly you should first check your mission objectives, do you have to beat those forces or do you have to secure some spot? That's important, I recall there were several protect and hold missions in Barbarossa's campaign...
