I can't upgrade a unit's weapon and armor when it already has an upgrade. But if the unit has no upgrade it is possible.

So the only way is to reduce the unit's strength(number of troops) right?

And whats your prefered general unit?

I like cavalry generals, often knights or similar. They are fast, mobile, tough and able to mow down routers effectively at the end of the battle to avoid bad vices about not fighting.

I can't see why you wouldn't be able to retrain a unit to upgrade its equipment while it's at full strength. Have you got all the appropriate buildings to produce the unit in the province you are trying to retrain in? It seems a bit daft if you can't retrain full units to get upgrades.

If for some stupid reason you can’t retrain while at full strength you will have to get a couple of men in the unit killed and retrain then. You can either use it in a battle or kill the leader with an assassin or spy.

I have never had any trouble retraining (upgrading) complete units of any degree of upgrade in provinces that are capable of producing the base type in the first place....

I quite like spearmen as generals - I can place them in the centre of my formations and know that they will stay put and provide their bonuses to all nearby units. The problem I have with cavalry is that they are at their best chasing around the battlefield and as such the generals loose their influence and, worse, are liable to get cut off and slaughtered....

My preferred unit type for a general (apart from a royal unit like a spare Prince) is a heavy cavalry unit. I'm fond of cavalry anyway but for a general it's important to keep them out of serious trouble (which is easier on a horse&#33http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif however you also need to be able to get them into a fight quickly (either to prevent cowardice vices or because the units with a General tend to be slightly stronger so can provide an edge in an important fight).

Well I can retrain a MAA with no upgrades in a province with +1 attack and +2 armor, but I can't do it with a MAA with a +1 armor. Good idea about the spy or asassin.

Due to the lack of replies, I have to ask, am I the only one experiencing this?

I am playing 1.1 without VI.

I can't say I've noticed it, but then I don't have the time to play it much and when I do, I rarely retrain units.

That isn't much help, but this might: post your question in the Main Hall. Some of those patrons don't visit the Entrance Hall. There is a lot of experience there and maybe some one can confirm your issue or explain what is happening.

my generals are always a royal unit(boyars, royal knights, mongol heavy cavalry, ect........).

since i only use 1 army as an invaing army, all the rest are defense only garrisons. so having a royal unit general is easy. and since he's my only invading general, he is always the best general, prince or king i have.

my best general now is (VI) lord steiner, 8 stars, 11 valour, 9 acumen, 5 piety, and full loyalty. his title is king of man a province title of an island between england and ireland.

all his troops are 7 valour and above and he has never lost a battle, no matter how samll he is.

and not to brag, but he had kill kings from every faction. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
