What's the difference between the following:-

Loch Ness Monster
The Yeti
Almughavars
Elvis.

The answer is Almughavars. All the rest have been spotted (yes, that WAS Elvis stocking those shelves at the co-op).

Now, I always have a few Inns sprinkled around. From start of game until the end I use mercenaries when needed or in a tight squeeze. So I wasn't too suprised when none showed up in my English Inn, or my Turkish one, or my German one, or the Byzantine one etc. etc. So I built an Inn in Aragon, because, well, that's what you do, right? But still, Lord Lucan would of been a safer bet of turning up than any almughavars. Ok, so English Inns EVEN IF they are in Aragon still don't attract almughavars. Maybe something to do with the decor or something.

So, latest campaign in the VI. I pick The Aragonese, rather excitedly I must admit. Surely, I will see some of the Lesser-Spotted-Almughavar now No, even better I thought, surely they are THE unique unit for the Aragonese. Imagine my disapp..... no, you don't have to imagine do you? I'm sure you've been through it yourself. We all have. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif

So, this goes out to you all. Please, please, check under your beds and behind your sofas for the lost almughavars. Maybe they fell down that gap between the oven and the cupboard - the one where the mass of unreachable, decomposing food resides. God bless them if they have

Finally, I think that surely, SURELY, the lowly Aragonese, 1 starting province and the world at their heels, should have this unit as a unique unit. They seem quite tasty.... your usual javelin bunch with with a juicy melee and an extremely palatable anti-cav bonus. Mmmmmm, my mouth is watering at the thought. Time to break this almughavar diet

So how the hell do I team up with these shy, socially-exclusive Howard Hughes'? If an Aragonese Inn in Aragon cannot tempt them out of their lairs then what does it take? I love dual-purpose units and am dying to try these. Alternatively (and more seriously) could anyone explain how or what to mod in the game files so that I can change this unit into a unique unit for the Aragonese. They could do with it. Or are they just a myth? A legend born out of fable? Have YOU ever seen or used one?

Thnx.

I still have not seen almughavars (sp) on either side of the battlefield. And, I have played a good 10 SP campaigns now.

Haven`t seen them either.
To mod them, go to their stats in the crusaders unit prod file and write ARAGONESE into the field where the faction is listed. You must also specify a building that`s necessary to build them.

I heard that rumour about them being rebels in Navarre, so in my Aragonese campaign, first thing I did was check and...... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif.

But that was in Early After the quick-save AND the auto-save both failed on me I then started a game in Late (not to play, just to test). No rebels, but I thought maybe they aren't available as mercernaries til that time period so I built an Inn and clicked and clicked like the devil himself, checking each time for mercenaries. Not a sausage But wait, didn't I hear/read/smell something about swordsmith4??? So, click-click-click, 1 Citadel later, could it, might it................, ah, no http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif

And so, all this time the pesky blighters were stowed away in the middle period Always the last place you look eh? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif Still, would be nice to have these available as regular troops for the Aragonese. Now, about that modding......

Ah, you make it sound so easy Probably presuming some knowledge on my behalf http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif I had a look at that text file and it looked rather jumbled - wasn't sure where 1 field ended and the next started. I will back-up and have a stab at it. I think a Spearmakers Workshop should suffice as the required building.

Thanks for the info. They're an unusual unit and would be quite interesting to use. I don't understand why they're so buried away though.

edit: ah weird affects in preview... no matter http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif

TLE, The file can look a bit daunting to edit as is but there is a handy tool that can help edit the prod files in a simple to follow format. Go to the Org download page and look for GnomeUnitBuildProjEditor V2.0 view the readme and follow the columns to edit the unit to what and where you want it to be. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

I think that in unmodded campaign they can only be hired as mercenaries in Aragon (never mind the description that says they plied their trade all over Mediterranean). This is not very likely to happen, since Aragon will usually be built up, and therefore have a relatively small chance of mercs showing up.
I modded them to be available to catholics, in Navarre and Aragon, and to require spearmaker's guild and inn to build. Otherwise they are too "precious" to use if you ever get them (I have this annoying habit of preserving units I cannot build http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif ).

I saw them as mercs in a game as the Turks just the other day In syria, I think it was. I was surprised, having never seen them before and believing that I could only get them in Aragon. Needless to say, I got them and used them.

In one battle, they killed more than 80 men, more than any of my other units that battle, and I only used them for a few javlin volleys and a charge into some spearmen. They rock

Any info on exactly how they are generated would be greatly appreciated.

I have seen them as mercenaries, before VI actually, but I don't remember how and as who.

If you want to try them in battle you can try them in a custom battle as the aragonese or sicilians.
