As far as I am aware it's impossible in the game without editing the game files (exception to every rule - vikings http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif). But I think it would bring an interesting new concept to the game if you could change religions.
For example imagine if the hungarian king adopted Judaism, the Pope could then condemn him and pressure him to renounce Judaism and return Hungry to catholicism. When the Hungarian King refuses the Pope asks the catholics nations to crusade the Hungarians until their king is dead. Then the heir emerges the player could have the choice to rejoin the chrisitain flock or continue the way of his predecessor.
This will probably never happen now thougfh with RTW on its way and VI already out. Maybe CA where thinking about it when they were experimenting with the vikings religion.
What do you guys think?

I would love that, and with each new heir they choose sides, a cival war doesnt have to happen, just one heir is catholic and the other non-catholic, so if one takes over, the religion could change. then a cival war may happen.

i like the idea, but it would be better suited as a GA goal. Historically, countries didn't change religions until well after the Renaissance but it would have been challenging, for example, to have to change over the majority of your English territories and population to Protestant (using particular priests and bishops) or for the Germans to go Calvinist or somesuch.

well i meant on a more-than-one faction scale.
around the mid 1500s several versions of Christianist began to appear, and the changeovers began more regularly.
but if there were a GA campaing for the Rome game, this might an interesting goal.

Why should Calvinism be a GA goal for the Germans? It`s not like there were many calvinists in Germany.
However, it`s an interesting idea and since I still hope for a Total War game in the 30-years-war period, this would fit it.
Historically the reformation and counter-reformation were among England's bloodiest periods.
If this option became available it should dramatically affect the loyalty of provinces and generals. For realism generals with very high piety before the religion change should revolt regardless of their loyalty.

In my current modded campaign (its 1542) i decided to 'recreate' the Reformation in England, esp the Closure of the Monasteries by Henry VIII. Role-playing my King as the reformist, i destroyed most of the religious buildings in my territories, in order to build new 'Protestant' ones. Result: widespread revolt and Civil War. As i was also trying to temper my urge to build some huge, unrealistic Empire, and limited myself to English territories, this was my first major war, and i have to admit it was rather fun. When the third Civil War broke out, i backed the rebels and there was an English Revolution. I like to role-play my campaigns quite alot, and try to engineer certain events. Try it sometime.
