I just wondered what everyones favorite unit is and why. For me it is Cavalry Archers. The general rock, paper, scissors rule is that spears beat cavalry, cavalry beat archers, and archers beat spears. The fact that CA are both Cavalry and Archers makes them very versetile. I often have 100+ kills for each unit, in a battle recently I killed 370 with 3 units. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Grumble grumble. bleeding CA. dirty evil things http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif

Would have to say for me its the YC as they should kill those CA (but they dont) seriously though i find them the most versitile part of my armys and they work with what my tactics are. If its one thing I get bored with though its a missile battle. (Not enough heads Gah Ganash)

Could get more interested in Ninjas though http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Naginata Infantry, slow, cumbersome, low morale. Suits my army well and suits my style better http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

two words: Warrior Monks
these guys deserve to be known as the most feared infantry unit... they slice through YS's like a hot knife thru butter; ND's, fast as they are, always lose in a straight fight; ashi's often rout before the monks even get there, and if they don't, they die quickly; NI's have that armor, so they last a while, but without support, they too die/rout eventually.... Monks can even be very effective against Cav in the right situation... thier only "achilles heel" is missile fire, and an investment in armor can greatly reduce even this risk... they are expensive, but like the "readme" says, v103 goes a long way towards making WM's worth every penny....

also, they used to carry a "portable" temple with them into every battle... how cool is that? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smokin.gif

now if i could just learn to use them as they are worthy of being used

Mine is the Yari Samarias. Mainly due to the fact I make them the mainstay of my army from the beginning. Once the A.I has decent units to slaughter them I out honour them, since I merge my units together(I wish the comp did the same thing as The game would be more of a challenge).I hate going agianst a 30 unit 900 man army as they will get slaughtered since my units outnumber theres. I do throw in some Nodachis and cavarly as back up (almost never train monks as there cost is just crazy and with good manaegmant 1 YS and 1 No-Dachi wich is the same price as 1 monk unit will take out the monks). I mainly use archers to back up my YS's and have them make the monks and No-Dachi's manageble for my YS's. Only if I am the Mori Clan do I find the monks greatly worth it. Only time the monks give me a problem is when the AI keeps attacking the rebel monks and give them an honour 6 or 7.(I'm sure theres a few that had made that horrible discovery to watch 300 monks and archers route a huge army)

defending: Nag Infantry h5 (can't be beat... except by HC) (warrior monks of equal honour... ppfffft)
attacking: Cav Archers most definately. There is not a more mobile force in shogun. Shalack infantry from a safe distance, flank from behind (as most players consider them useless in melee, they will be totally ignored usually and will be given open opportunities for flanking) and main word, FAST (i use my cav archers with 0honour and i can still always rely on them. BUT if you want to really use them, 2H is enough to shalack any newb http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

all units in Shogun could be considered favourtite since ur enemy have the same http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif is not like in M:TW
all of them have an certain use and could get u really nasty surprises if u desconsider them , event those ashigaru can make u loose.
anyway , considering my style i say that warrior monk are my favourite for infantry ( because of their morale bonus - they are fanatical warriors ) and cavalry archers for cavalry because they're best for giving to enemy the knock-out http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif
but because in Shogun u dont have a special unit for each clan i really dont have favourite ones .the catch is to maximize ur posibilities considering the army u have

In the Sword Dojo on July 2, 2003, Shinano asked: "I just wondered what everyone's favorite unit is and why." ...

For me it's a toss between Warrior Monks and Battlefield Ninja.

Playing the Mori, it was a kick to build the infrastructure needed to produce maxed out (Golden armored, 3-Sword) monks, produce a full stack army of nothing but them, and then ravage enemy after enemy with my golden monk horde. I'd set the entire army up in a long 4-row deep line across the width of the battlefield in wide formation, approach within a reasonable distance of the enemy Taisho (maintaining the long wide line across the battlefield) and then charge the Taisho, closing formation on contact with any troops. They would envelope the enemy and chew them up Talk about lawnmower men Yeah, no savvy or skill, but highly effective. Yeah, I'd lose maybe 10-15% each battle, but the production centers were churning them out each turn, so I'd just replenish them.

16-unit stacks of total BFNs are great port raiders, and can whup armies up to 6 times their size if managed carefully on the battlefield. and I love using a couple in a diversified army to sneak around back and take out enemy taishos.

Sheer, raw power. The pinnacle of stealth and skill. That's why I luv 'em.
