Hi People http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/pat.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

I am just about to place a LARGE order for some games. Large considering that I only ever played one or two games at a time. I will be including the following:

-Europa Universalis II
-Global Power
-Tom Clancy's Raven Shield
-Port Royale (thx for earlier suggestions, tried demo)
-IL2 Sturmovik: The Forgotten Battles
-Eve Online: the Second Genesis

Can anyone suggest any additions or alterations, please ?
All feedback very welcome.

Watch out with Raven Shield. It's pretty fun, but the support has not been very good. A lot of complaints with the game and bugs, especially with multiplayer, and some of the cd keycodes didn't work. Check out the forums for other info. You don't seem to be the fps kind of man, judging from the games list, but I would recommend Aliens Vs. Predator 2 and the expansion, as well as Jedi Knight 2.

Thx. I do like some FPS....such as Soldier of Fortune 2. I would buy like 10 copies of that game I think it's that good. Support is awesome, becuase you will never need it, it runs way too smooth for that. I have yet to experience any problems with that game.

Thx for the tip...heading to Raven Shield forums soon.
Will check out and see how AvsP2 and Jedi score up.

Two unconventional suggestions. Research them before ordering, though.

Uncommon Valor is a very -- very -- detailed treatment of strategy the Southwest Pacific in 1942-43. The tactical combat isn't detailed at all but the planning, supply and so forth is. It could be quite a challenge for some gamers. Quite a bore for most. I have it, and like it.

Another game I haven't seen but which is getting rave reviews is Combat Mission: Barbarossa to Berlin. It's sold by a company in England, I believe, and has to be ordered online.

========

For games in general, check out: http://www.gamerankings.com/itemrankings/simpleratings.asp

Gamespot and IGN are also good.

is it not combat mission: Barbarossa to Berlin?
Its good but only played the demo http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif

I have Planetside which is really good. Need ADSL tho because on my brothers ISDN it lags slightly on large battles(by LARGE i mean 100-200 people fighting over a base) It has tanks and aircraft and has good infantry weapons and gets updated and fixes bugs every other day

Civ 3 is good but you might have it and i hear EU2 is similar.

CM2/CMBB is very good, but also pretty hardcore and difficult to get into. The game I'm currently suggesting everyone buy is Warrior Kings Battles. If you look carefully, you can find it for under £20 and it has tons of replay value. Very much an underdog that deserves your time.

EEUURAAH.

You are correct. I'll edit the earlier post.

If you like FPS try no one lives forever and it's sequel, they are very funny and well designed. I would recommend the two thief games as well, sneaky stealthy action and about £5 these days. Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri is good for turn based strategy (much better than civ 3 IMO), also worth looking at is Age of wonders 1 + 2.

If you find Europa Universalis 2 please tell me where you got it I've been looking for it in the UK for quite a while and have found nothing. No shops stock it, no web shops have it left, it's not on ebay and the publisher don't sell it either.

For FPS games:
Max Payne if you do not already own it
Unreal Tournament 2k3, some say it's good

For RTS games:
Ground Control, you might like to try the demo first
Warrior Kings: Battles, nice try to liven up the scene, fails due to bad support (still a very nice game)
O.R.B which is hard to get but very satisfying game. The developers released a 50 mb patch which added couple frigate class ships, good support.
Praetorians, warm-up before Rome: Total war http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I'll stop here so my post won't be too RTS heavy http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif

Doom3.....last date I saw was end of July. Reviews and news from E3 is that the graphics and play will outdo everything out there. But you need a Radeon9000 or above (or equiv) to play.

Combat Mission is available from CDV in Europe, or online from www.battlefront.com everywhere else in the world.

If you have any understanding of modern (ie WW2) warfare then it's pretty easy to get into - I can imagine it's difficult to understand for ppl without any understanding of low level warfare of the time tho', as it's realistic rather than fantastic http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

I would NOT recommend Global Power (Super Power in the US). The whole idea is really cool, but the game just doesn't work right. Rather than fix bugs, they just turn off features. The graffics are something you'd expect from an old atari, yah they're that bad. I made a mod for it a while back that made it so that the AI actually tried competing with you, but the game still wasn't that fun.
Hopefully Super Power 2 will be a lot better, because the game would be really cool if it just did what it was supposed to.
Also, they stopped patching it, though it definately still needs it.

Good old System Shock 2 if you dont have it already. This is by far my favorite game. It's thief-based, and the graphics are not first-rate by today's standards, but the game has excellent atmosphere. The audio surpasses everything else. Simply perfect voice acting and great scary sound effects. The music is great, but some people dont think it meshes with the game very well. I liked it.

An IL2 game might be one of the best purchases you ever make.If you dont know, the game is made by a russian named Oleg and he gives very good support.Be sure to use the official website for patch release and info.

IL2 which is produced by UBI Soft also does Ravenshield and i have heard nothing but nightmares about the game. For a FPS i would recommend Novalogic`s:BHD or Americas Army which is a free download.I play CS(sorry).

Get a joystick if you dont have one,i would love to give recommendations on flight equipment. If you know all this crap then nevermind.

My opinions on the games recommended. They are not bad games but..

Soldier of Fortune 2 single player isn't that good. The AI knows where you are and chucks grenades on you all the time. I dunno about multi player.

Max Payne is a pain in later stages with all the reloading due to heavy damage the later guns do to you.

No one lives forever 2 has very slow loading. AI is hopeless in a fight. They never shoot back when you lean around a corner. It is funny though but short.

Thief series is great. 2nd is better than 1st. I don't think much of System Shock 2, prefering thief and the Underworld Series(all by Looking Glass)

IL2 is for those hardcore flight sims. You got a joystick?

I recommend a 1999 game Jagged Alliance 2, I believe the Gold addition is out. Best strat shooter since X-Com.

Well, you might also try Warcraft3 plus the expansion. It's a bit cartooney, but well made. The SP campaign will bring your skill level up and draw you into the story, but you'll probably lose hopelessly on battlenet until you got some good amount of MP games under your belt.

Or in my case, find out that banshees are overpowered and just screw all the other armies with them. Then realise how unbalanced the game is and leave multiplayer.

But then all RTS is unbalanced. but don't ask me, I'm not an expert, I'm an urban legend, not to be trusted till you have seen and touched it with your very own hands.

Like The Great Wall of China from space.

Looking a couple of months down the line Half Life 2 and Thief 3 are both expected for Autumn 2003. It's a bit of a wait I know but from the looks of things both are going to be very good.

If yuo head over to the official Raven Shield forums take it with a grain of salt. That is the most negative forum there is... and a lot of people shouting about all the huge problems they have. Now I don't say Raven Shield is flawless but it's not as bad as you might expect after visiting those forums. I have the game for some months now and never had any problems with it, support isn't that bad as they say as well, with three patches since the release in march you might even say support is better than MTW's... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Visit theplatoon.com, they have a lot of extra maps (MP and SP) and a bit more civilised forum.

If you gonna buy RS be sure to play it online, the coop version is brilliant. I have played it a lot (still have to finish the SP part).

I want Thief 3, but I heard that the company that made the original Thiefs went out of business and sold their game. I also heard that no one was working on Thief 3.

I have Raven Shield and it seems to work all right for me, all though I am just not really satisfied with the game itself; something is missing from the conversion from Rogue Spear. Bugs haven't affected me too much, although multiplayer has been very laggy. By the way, does anyone know of a good weps mod? Maybe something with a lot of weapons like Lloyd's mod and NATO from old Rogue Spear?

Looking Glass studios did go bust http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif but many of their employees went to Ion Storm Austin. They are working on thief 3 with many of the original thief team. They have promised that number 3 will follow the tradition and will be good. Heaven help them if it is not http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mad.gif So far apart from the announcement that it will be on the X-box (Damn it Gates, leave our games alone You've already stolen enough) as well as PC things seem promising.

Take a looksee at http://www.thief-thecircle.com for more.

well after playing the Rise of Nations Demo, its gone on my to get list with EU2 and BF1942

Leet Eriksson

EU2 is great,i have been playing it for some time now, especially the user created mods(the game is pretty easy to modify)and there is almost 100+ nations you can play with.also Hearts of Iron is pretty cool,it also has different units and loads of research options.you can play as any nation that existed in WWII but its preferable to play the 6 main nations involved in the war(USA,Britian,Germany,Italy,USSR and Japan)the time span is not enough for other countries to really conquer the world. Also the world is split in 3 categories Democratic,Facist,Communist.

Hi All

Thanks for all the recommendations on good games, I ordered the following from Amazon.co.uk:

-Eve
-Port Royale
-Raven Shield
-Il-2 Forgotten Battles
-Europa Universalis 2

-RTW
I preordered it again, as all faith in CA is not yet lost. I did howver cancel my first pre-order when I saw the problems in VI. I hope RTW will not have all these bugs.

Problem

I did not check but apparently Amazon.co.uk no longer has EU2 in stock and my whole order is being delayed waiting for that. I have removed EU2 from the main order and re-ordered it separately. BUT while I am waiting does anyone know where I can buy this game ? Does anyone know where it is in stock and I can get it immediately ?

Thanks for your help.

SeljukSinan,
If you're in Luxemburg I think France isn't too far from you http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
Here EU2 is available in Classic release for 15€ in any FNAC, Virgin, Extrapole, and most PC games retailer I suppose
I still saw it last week in a Paris FNAC store...

Also, if you're in 4X games have a try at Galactic Civilizations, not flashy but damn challenging and interesting to play

I will check out FNAC asap. (hope they have it in English though, I think that is the original language of the game.)

Huh, I fear you'll get it in French, and original language is Swedish IIRC (Paradox is a Swedish company http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif ). Maybe in Luxemburg you can get it in German too ? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
But IIRC everything is in text files, language will switch to English as soon as you'll install an English-language mod - and you should Take either AGC, EEP, or both http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif (go to EU2 forums for info)
