So which units/unit types always make it into your army? Not necessarily your favourite units but the basic workhorse of your army that always goes into the line up.

I don't mean broad categories of units like infantry but specific unit types like billmen or pavase crossbows.

So, who always makes it onto your battlefields?

The most current MAA always gets in. The same goes for the most current type of sergeant. And I always have some crossbows/arbalests in my bag somewhere unless it's early in which case I pack some archers.

Cavalry (specifically knights) are like tissues, you try to take them everywhere but there are occasions where you forget or run out. Those occasions are always when you need them most http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif

Has to be Rus Spearmen for me when im Novgorod (or Russia when ive modded it http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif ) I think Rus spearmen are almost the best Spear in Early and are quite cost effective

I would usually have the elite troops of the faction in and other good troops like byz inf and VG and Byz lancers and Kats for Byzantines and billmen and longbowmen for england etc

depends on which faction I'm playing.

but lately I've been making to sure to include one unit of horse archers (through all periods) to use as a mop-up, chasing down the enemy's high quality fleeing cavalry, generals. or whatever troops I don't want to face again.

basically horse archers are fast enough to catch any fleeing unit, so they go after whatever I want completely dead.

Since im english...the billmenn and longbowmen is a must....billmen are quite able to take on most type of units and longbowmen are v useful to soften up the enemy before hand to hand takes place...

happy independence day(sp?) everyone http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

you can always find CMAAs, mongol horse archers. royal and normal knights, longbowmen, serpentine(sp?), and mercenries http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Playing english its gotta be the billmen once you can get them, they rock against any cav. earlier, i used a lot of feudal sarg, then chiv sarg (as long as you have leader giving good morale). longbows are nice but they run out of arrows so fast, not good when you get successive waves. of course you gotta have some knights or mounted bows for mobility to trouble spots and mopping up.

Longbowmen(at least 3)1 cav unit (even Hobilars can chase down archers) and 4 units of spearmen/billmen...the rest I leave open to the needs of the situation (mangonels, cannons, horse archers) I try and make a decent combined arms units, that can take on most any situation I run into.

Saracen Infantry, when playing turks or egyptians, that is. I almost always take 4 units of these guys. They can hold against almost anything while the rest of my army does its work.

In SP I'm with Soly: horse archers, or maybe horse missiles, 'cause I like Jinetes too. Love to pick up mercenary Turcopoles, Boyars, mounted Xbows, Byz Cav, Mamluks, even Sipahi.

In MP its Pronoiai Allagion and Varangian Guards, the best axemen and cav in the game (IMHO).

I like the Culverin, because once you get them up to speed valor-wise you can take potshots from across the map and maybe kill the enemy general. They're also VERY good for sieges (obviously http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif)

Strangely, I've never actually used a serpentine in any MTW game... what do they do?

Mamushi

Not sure about serpentines...light weight shot, and they always seem to hit long...not too bad at close range against massed troops though (but then again, this could apply to any cannon)

I almost ever have a spearwall (of the best available spearmen) and 2 units of crossbows or arbs. The rest of the army may vary but that`s the core of my army.

but, spearmen do horrible against swordmen. and i again go behind u w/ a couple light cavalry and hit ur xbowmen and my swordmen will crush ur spearmen at the same time http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif .

my favorite swordmen is CMMAs http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I rely heavily on a mixed unit approach, but to choose one: I always include spearmen, armored when available. They are essential for keeping cavalry away from my missile units. Then I include some melee units on either side to hit the melee units that try to close with the spearmen; as the English, that would be billmen.

People seems to use a lot of spearmen.. And archers.

I have to be very weird, I never use them.. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Okay, a little exception, SAP,longbowmen and Pavise Arbalesters are usefull to me, but those normal archers are pityful, and spearmen runs like little girls most of the times.. My armies consist half of heavy infantry like CMAA, Foot Knights and rest half are heavy cavalry; Chivalric, Goths and some mounted sergeants to slaughter those running enemys. All with full upgrades. It´s so beautiful sight http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

well it depends on who i am playing. If i am a faction with a unique spear that is good they would be in mine. if they dont like say Byzantium i wouls have VG, byz inf and maybe a few treb archers and of couse lots of cav.

I like Chivalric Sergeants a lot. They form the mainstay of my army, even if they are by no means my favorite units.

It depends too much on which faction I am playing, so I will talk about which mercenary units I always hire when I see them.

1. Billmen, Halbediers, and Italian Infantry
2. Any heavy calvary, usually Armenians and Kwazamarians(?)
3. Trebuchets, Mangonels
4. Alans, Horse Archers, Jinettes, Byzantines
5. Arbalesters

My ideal mercenary army would consist of Billmen, Byzantine Calvary, Pavise Arbalesters, plus whatever heavy infantry my faction produces. I would be quite confident of winning any battle with that combo.

Yes, likewise. It depends on the faction but there is one consistent in all of the different factions armies I use. Cavalry stoppers. Whatever dense formation spear wielding troop is available, I'll stock it. Stopping cavalry has got to be a priority.

As for serpentines, I always thought they had a faster rate of fire than other cannons, and they appear to be quite accurate.

A family pack of condoms for all my men. I dont want them to die from weird disseases, when they rape every female in the countryside, after I conquerd a province.

And for birth controle offcourse

I already have trouble enough keeping the many peasants at home at bay. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif

Pavise arbs. They are never the backbone of an army, but I always end up useing them no matter faction I am.

DemonArchangel
07-12-2003, 22:29
personally, pavaise arbalests are awesome, but they always get seperated from my spears and cavalry, so they get ridden down.

Heraclius
07-13-2003, 16:43
as the byzantines my the backbones of my army are always the Byzantine infantry and the trebizond archers.

I like Saracen infantry a lot when i play factions that get them (egyptians and turks). They are like Chiv seargents but require less buildings and are avaiable in all periods http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
