View Full Version : Adding weapons & the burning oil...

I think that as it stands, the burning oil at castle gates does not kill enough people - gates should be stormed with extremely large losses, if at all possible, hence requiring a proper siege train to take a castle of any great size.
I have so far been unable to alter the values to my satisfaction - in fact it all goes wrong (one time naptha pots were being lobbed from the doors). Can someone with far greater knowledge point me in the right direction?
And is it possible to add extra weapons to the weapon list, or will this cause the game to crash????
Thanks

I think someone else experimented with this and got better kill ratio by editing the Blast radius which I believe the default setting is 0 so try changing the integer around and see what happens as to the weapons I beleieve you are right in that you can not add entirley new ones without crashing the game.

Blast radius definately increases the number of kills. It's possible to make cannons that destroy all units anywhere on the map by firing one shot. Generals are an exception to this, as they have more than one hitpoint.

I agree altering the other projectile stats makes a difference, but I thought I heard that the boiling oil didn't actually use the stats in that file to work out damage.

To tell for sure, set the lethality etc to zero and if it does nothing at all, then we have an obvious relationship.

Quote[/b] ]I don't think it uses the projectile stats. There's probably a reason why it has an entry in there, but I can't remember what it is. I think the oil just takes effect in an area rather than being a legitimate calculated projectile.

Here are some fascinating numbers for you:
- minimum number of enemy near the gate who will trigger oil: 3
- maximum number of friendly men who will be considered expendable: 20
- ratio of nearby enemy to friendly men which is considered an acceptable risk: 1 to 1
- time taken to reload oil: between 12 and 25 seconds
- time for which the gate will be 'alert' and consider pouring oil after it's been attacked: 20 seconds
- number of shots: 5 (it turns out http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif)
- duration of pour: 9 seconds
- delay between start of pour and start of kill zone: 2 seconds
- chance of killing any individual soldier: about 3% per second that he remains in the killzone

This quote was from GilJaySmith CA Programmer the original thread is in the MTW library under Boiling Oil,seems it cannot be modified?

I edited the blast radius and it SEEMED to make them lose more men attacking the gate. I'll ramp it up like crazy and see what happens.
