Whats the deal with these archers? When assaulting fortresses, esp those small warrior holds in VI, a lot of the archers refuse to shoot, or only a few shoot.
Too close?
Also is there a penalty to shoot from inside a fort? I once had 2 units of crossbow men and they shot only 10 people who are breaking in. Thats like a big difference from the outfield shooting.
Must be the walls.
Walls form an obstacle, just like woods do. The engine works out the trajectory of a projectile, and if it seems that it's going to hit something very soon after being fired, the man doesn't shoot. You need to figure out the angle, i.e. the distance to the wall that will result in most of the men shooting for best results. Crossbows and other missiles with flat trajectories are terrible at shooting over the walls, unless they are on a high terrain, such as the motte. This, of course, applies for both being outside and inside of the castle.

thats fairly ironic considering crossbows were the premier siege missile weapon http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif

So how how exactly did they use them in a siege
Did they use them to aim at the little slits in the towers or to shoot throug the gate or did they use them to fire in once the gate was open
They used them to kill the archers that are suppose to be on the walls. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Missile troops suck in sieges, both in defence and offence. I think that in STW the defending archers could shoot through the walls, wich kinda makes sense.
They could... So far I remember.
It was great having muskets in a defensive battle then.
It is great being back again.

Since MTW does not let missile troops man the walls, it should not penalise them for shooting out in siege defences.

I don't know why they changed the way missiles work at sieges. Perhaps they thought sieges were hard enough already for the atacker http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif
Anyway, as it is, missile troops are spear/sword fodder.
STW didnt have the archer and ballistae towers, like MTW does, so its only fair that missile troops cant shoot out of the walls in assaults..

Your archers can shoot out if they are in an elevated position inside the castle... Namely in the central keep area.
Still you must have a penalty for all those "free arrows" being shot from the walls, and this is it.
Let's not forget that the walls and towers fire by themselves independently of any archer units. Walls in Shogun do not.
VI archers will also burn palisades and gates now.
