There was some talk in the barracks forum about organizing a touney for STW in an attempt to revive interest and get more people playing. However, before anything is begun to be organized we need some idea of how many people would be interested. If you are interested post in this topic.

A tourney would be a good idea it should get more peeps playing.

I'd be interested.

Please include me,I am always willing to participate in anything to promote the game.
I hope this will be based on the most excellent 1.03 stats too?Its a good chance to promote that too hmm http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
I will do my best to direct fellow diehards here over the weekend to post their interest too.

If it's friendly and played in week-end GMT day/evening, then I would participate.

Yes definatly count me in. 103 is prefered as well.

If possible we should also specify certain maps as playing fields.

Would it be 1v1's or what sort of format?

Mori Zennousha

Konnichiwa all...

1) we've got to generate more interest in this if it's going to fly... any suggestions?

2) 103 seems to be running out in front as the preferred stat, but i have to admit, we'll probably exclude some people if this is the only stat used... if there were enough people, it would be cool to have a category each for 102 and 103... if there is to be only one stat, however, we'll probably get the biggest response with 102 (not to retract from my earlier post, but trying to be "realistic", heh, heh)

3) Celtlan made a good suggestion for the maps... there should probably be some standard set here, with fairness for all the top consideration... Ironing Board is probably the fairest of all, but how boring Totomi and quite a few custom maps come to mind... (BTW, good to see you back, Celtlan)

4) 1v1 format?... i'm sure that will be there, but i think it would be cool if we had enough interest to also have 2v2's battle for "best team" bragging rights... something to consider?

5) are we talking about a single elimination tourney here? or some other format, like a "losers' bracket" for example?

just some things to consider... i hope this gets off to a big start; please LMK if there's anything i can do to help get the ball rolling...

As far as maps go its not too hard to download any map if those interested plan on playing. we could do a quick map zip and upload for those onto the org site so people dont have to d/l huge map packs. so any map I think would be ok as long as people bother to d/l them.

yes 102 and 103 should be included to widen the interest as there are some who cant play 103 (and those that wont he he).

several formats spring to mind. 1v1s of course, 2v2's.3v3 if there would be enough interest.

oh and ffa's woohoooooooooooooo

we could make it winner progresses to next round losers play off each other. or do it on a table format. 3 points win, 1 for draw. -5 for a drop out mid game. oh wait can you draw? lol

a weekend would be preferable or as long as we know whos interested we can arrange games via pm when the two partys are available for a table style match.

battles could be recorded and available for others to view.

If we want to sort out the details and decide what sounds best then we decide and set rules and then publise it to everyone we meet on server for a few weeks and then start it.

A weekend sat and/or sunday will be best i expect for most people certainly gets my vote.
If those interested do post please so numbers are known and your views can be taken into account in what you want.

I think its an excelent idea. Bravo Shinano for bringing it to our attension.

I'll tell everone online today, since it is sunday there should be plenty of people.

A tourney using 1.03 would get more people using 1.03, very important as there are still far to many people using 1.02 http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif .

Not everone has custom maps so it would be better to use another map. We can ask people to download a little statswapper but it is too much to ask them to download a 20 MB mappack if they have a slow connection.

Ironing board is a bit boring but it would be best because of its fairness, on any other map the defender has an advantage.

1v1 format would be best, it would be hard to get all 4 players there consistantly for a 2v2.

I was thinking it would be best to have a round of 16, round of 8, round of 4, round of 2 setup.

Howl Guys,

I'll be there http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smokin.gif

Also some sort of rules need to sorted out ie 4 max etc, I know these are not applicable normally in 103 stats, but for a tourney would be good.

Also, the maps should be changed each round eg:

R1 Totomi
R2 IB
R3 Siebgahara etc

this will keep it exciting and a need to adapt tactics.

Tosa, yes this will be friendly games. I hope it will add new blood tp STW/MI as I still feel its still the better TW game.

Konnichiwa,

Great, I can ask some friends to join.

Any type of game is fine with me really: 1v1, 2v2, 3v3, 4v4, campaign or scenario, extra rules, no rules. Though I hope for something that makes use of more than just 1 map, season and even koku level.

7:00-10:00 GMT is the best time. I've been online at these times and get games every day. It just takes good timing and some patience. That makes 14...I suggest we get 2 more and then start next weekend (saturday the 26th).

It seems to me that it would be best for one match to be played rather than best out of three, because of the time issue. Although perhaps when we get down to the final four we could make it best out of three. Also I think it would be good for the two people who lose in the round of 4 to play eachother for 3rd and 4th place. It might be too time consuming for that kind of thing in the rest of the rounds.

I see two difficulties:

1. Whoever is defender has an advantage. On ironing board and the like it is a small advantage but it can be significant.

2. Some people are not used to certain patches. Some people have very little practice wit 1.03, others have very little with 1.02.

To solve these two issues I would suggest the following rule:

Whoever is attacking gets to choose the patch.

This way the small disadvantage of attacking is counterbalanced by the advantage of getting to choose which patch.

For the maps, I would suggest Totomi for the first round, Seibagahara for the second round, and Ironing Board for the third round and final rounds.

Another thing that needs to be taken care of is the draw, who will play who. This could be done randomly by drawing names out of a hat but it would be better to do it like it is done in tennis, where the #1 player is on the opposite side from the #2 player etc. This would have to be done by someone who has played the other players and can make a rough estimate. Once this tourney is over we can use how far a person got before being eliminated to determine the draw.

Saturday the 26th of July day after my birthday and Parents are visiting.... Oh well they can do my gardening while I play http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif

My suggestion would be have the first person who signed up play the 16th, the second to play the 15th etc.

giving a play match of:

TBA16th v Shinano
Ithaskar Fearindel v TBA15th
Sjakihata Akechi v ShinGaiJin
Mori Zennousha v Dark Legend
TosaInu v NightRider
Skie Mirror Silvanoshei v Celtlan
Cheetah v Vegetabullz
Tenkisoratoti v Kansuke

How does that look to people?
Ill even flip coins for who attacks. heads its as it is tails its fliped round. First player listed is attacking.

Ok done that too.
if your oponent does not turn up then anyone else there whos not already listed can play in their stead.

Id suggest a flexible time frame when the two players to start sort out when they will both be there if some of the times are a little difficult.

Times for me GMT are 8am GMT till 12GMT then 3pmGMT till 7pmGMT.
If I need to be there in the time between what ive listed or later on I could mabey manage it. Just for Reference when arranging a time for us all to be there Im in the UK.

Look forward to seeing you all for some good fun

Just realised about hosting. Who cant host a game?
If two players cant host the others of us who can will have to host and watch if there is two people who cant host playing.

Its not a problem for me I dont mind doing it but it may slow down the games. Please indicate if you can or cant host and your availabilty for the 26th.

Hi Guys,

I'm all for this tourney, however I strongly reccomend that the match should comprise attack and defend, if tied at 1-1 the highest kills (2 games combined) goes through to next round. I can also see advantages for the attacker so its 50/50.

Sjakihata Akechi v ShinGaiJin
Mori Zennousha v Dark Legend
TosaInu v NightRider
Skie Mirror Silvanoshei v Celtlan
Cheetah v Vegetabullz
Tenkisoratoti v Kansuke

This looks acceptable to me.

The match will comprise attack and defend, if tied at 1-1 the highest kills (2 games combined) goes through to next round.

This also seems like a very good idea to me. However we would have to make it a rule that there is no deliberate routing or withdrawing of troops. Otherwise a player could win a battle on defense with more kills than his opponent and then auto rout his army in the next battle.

With each player attacking and defending it doesn't matter which map they play on. So if the two players can agree on a map then that map will be used. If not, Ironing board will be the default map.

The patch issue still needs to be dealt with. It might be a good idea to use 1.02, since not everyone has played 1.03 and it would put some people at disadvantage. 1.02 is probably the fairer patch right now in this regard.

Cheetah
07-21-2003, 17:24
Sorry, but the highest kill is not good. You can rout someone killing only 200 or so, or you can defeat someone in a close battle killing 800 and losing 700. Which victory worth more? That is why best of 3 would be better. That is, in case of a tie a 3rd tiebreaker game would be played, perhaps on the ironing board to make it as fair as possible.

Sasaki Kojiro
07-21-2003, 18:24
If you win both games it doesn't matter who kills the most, you still win.

If it was a best of 3 game, one player would get to defend more than they attack...still an option though.

Another thing:
In a kills type game kensai and bfn shouldn't be allowed, since they will almost certainly kill more than they lose.

TosaInu
07-21-2003, 18:25
Konnichiwa,

A tiebreaker 3th game would be a neat solution.
I do have a question about the tourney, the idea is (also) to create an extra 'reason' to visit the foyer and play STW games.

It doesn't seem of much help when 2 players agree about a time, complete their matches and then leave the foyer again. Very rigid windows aren't good but wide windows won't work very well either.

I'ld suggest to agree about a window of about 4 hours a week, say a Sunday morning. People can play tourney matches, but there are also some people available to do some regular games after/before that. It will be possible to resolve a match on another day, but before the next tourneyday starts for the next round. This could be repeated for 3 weeks and the winner will get some kind of reward (champion icon, badge or something) and the tourney will start all over. A bit of a mix between a tourney and a ladder.

Sasaki Kojiro
07-21-2003, 19:13
I agree, TosaInu, something like that should be done.

Ithaskar Fëarindel
07-22-2003, 00:20

Sasaki Kojiro
07-22-2003, 01:59
I like the idea of a third round tiebreaker. I think the first two games should be 1.03, as one of the purposes of the tourney is to promote 1.03. However the tiebreaker needs to be fair, so it should be 1.02 on Ironing board, as there is no advantage to either side with those conditions.

TosaInu
07-24-2003, 16:14
Konnichiwa,

A few have voiced objection to 1.03. Either 1.02, 1.03 or both http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif are fine with me. If the choice will be 1.03, then the first concern is to install it for each participant (which isn't that hard) and give them some time to get used to it. I speak for myself here when I say that the shift in gameplay from 1.02 to 1.03 is quite straightforward.

Since the idea is to make this a cross between a ladder and a tourney, it's more important to get it running than setting each subrule in stone (could also change the character of each tourney or add rules for the next one: 102 or 103 stats, different sets of maps, seasons, koku, 1vs1 or team).

Shall we start with the most simple type first?

1vs1
1.02 stats (everyone has those).
Totomi map. Each match consists of 2 games: all players attack and defend once.
Ironing board tiebreaker.
10,000 koku
Season Summer.
Morale/fatigue/restricted camera on and limited ammo.
4 max rule.

Using Celtlans matches:

TBA16th v Shinano
Ithaskar Fearindel v TBA15th
Sjakihata Akechi v ShinGaiJin
Mori Zennousha v Dark Legend
TosaInu v NightRider
Skie Mirror Silvanoshei v Celtlan
Cheetah v Vegetabullz
Tenkisoratoti v Kansuke

What we need are 2 more players and a window. Aim is to complete the first round (we should leave an option to complete matches before next Saturday if not all can make it), but we may play the 2nd too or even complete the tourney.

How about this window: start saturday 26th July 2002 14.00 GMT-18.00 GMT (any people from Asia or Australia?).

Does this sound good to the participants?

Sasaki Kojiro
07-24-2003, 17:02
Sounds very good TosaInu. If no one else signs up Ithaskar and I will either default through or play some people who just happen to be in the foyer.
As to the map, personally I find 4th more interesting then totomi...since each player will attack and defend we don't need an ultra-fair map and 4th is harder to attack which I think could make things more interesting.

Kansuke
07-24-2003, 23:36
Hi Guys,

Totomi is the better (fairer) map as there are good opportunities for attacker and defender.

4th, is easy to defend and a hill (or bump campers dream), personally I dont mind which it is, as I prefer to attack anyway. After 18:00 GMT would suit me better.

no sign or messages from my opponent any ideas folks? what should i do?
play one of the other people? anyone want to join in?
id still like to be involved but if i cant arrange a time to find my opponent im stuck at present.

Im happy to go with what people think is fair or if my opponent has been around on the weekends that others have seen ill forfit to them.
a few general times at the weekends would be good for more of us to meet up would be good apart from the main gmt evenings already set up mabey?

I guess if the missing people haven't replied by this weekend we had better try and find some people willing to play in there place. AggonyShim mentioned that AggonyAnskare would probably be willing to play and I talked to AggonyStefan in the foyer and he was interested.

As for the next round I think the koku should be kept the same, but a winter battle on a different map might be fun.

Konnichiwa, all...

well, like Celtlan, i too have not rec'd any response from my opponent... i myself have had a lot going on lately, but i've been keeping up with the forums at least, hoping not to stall the Tourney any more than it has been... to those of you used to seeing me online more, i'm still here, just lurking a bit as my playing time has been reduced http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/angry.gif (you know, the damned real world has got an awful lot of expectations... i mean, really...)

but i digress... i'm in favor of selecting new opponents, as suggested by Mimesaka... here's an idea: make a new post, called "Tourney Deadline" or something like that... give a date that those who have expressed interest, but have yet to play, must respond by... then, on the next day, replace any non-responders with new opponents (it seems there may be at least a few... last week i saw 3 people i had not seen before.. now, they may have been aliases, but at least one seemed to be truly new to the Foyer)... merely a suggestion; do with it as you will...

as for the second round, all the suggestions sound good so far... i would suggest that the koku be raised a bit, just to give the survivors more latitude, maybe tweak their armies, or get that upgrade that they're used to playing with... call it a reward for surviving the first round... on the other hand, purists would argue that you don't need upgrades if you're really good, so maybe that reasoning is flawed... what do you all think?

tha's all for now... see you all soon on the Battlefield...

Hi guys,

Maybe the fixtures should be revised, IE Cetlan could play Mori, while we wait for the missing players or whether we deem it necessary to replace them with new ones.

I am not in favour of raising the Koku level it starts getting alittle unbalanced.

We shouldn't delay round 2 much longer. We could also say those people who are active will go on to round 2, anyone still interested can do a rebound. It's Friday now, my fault, any unfinished match should be completed Monday morning 10 gmt, then we'll discuss about the settings for round 2 and create new matches. Does that sound ok?

If 1 of the matchplayers doesn't show up, then the other goes to round 2 and the former can do a rebound later. If neither shows up, both can do a rebound.

Konnichiwa all...

i have to admit, i'm a bit confused by what has been proposed... Kansuke's suggestion was clear enough, and Celtlan has contacted me about scheduling our matches...

however, as i re-read your posts Tosa-sama, it sounds like your suggesting that those of us with "no-show" opponents should just move on to the second round, and not play each other... is that correct? i can understand why, of course; there must be 8 players in the second round, and if Celtlan and i play each other, there won't be, unless more players are found and added to the list... this makes sense to me as well...

i can see the good and bad in both possibilities... the only big problem i see with Celtlan and myself playing is that we'll have to fill our spots with 2 other playes to ensure 8 in the second round... considering the fact that it's been difficult to schedule matches as they are, i do question how likely it is to get 2 more players in and have them complete their matches in a timely manner so that we can continue into the second round... what do you all think?

in the meantime, i have responded to Celtlan, and unless something changes 'twixt now and then, we will play this weekend, probably saturday afternoon... please let us know if there is a change, and we'll figure things out accordingly...

see you on the battlefield,

I think we should make it 1.02, this tourney has been going too slow without waiting anymore for people to d/l and try out 1.03. Nagashima is a fun map, I've been playing on it recently and definately think we should use it for this round, perhaps 4th for the next round. I'm not sure what the point in making it 8k is but I don't really mind what the koku is as long as it isn't too much.

Oh and sorry about the Shinano/Mimesaka thing, for some reason I registered with a different name on the forum than my online name, it's led to confusion before but what can you do.

I may be otherwise engaged over the next week or two (CWB and vacation), so I need to play round 2 asap. I am willing to play anyone who has progressed into round 2 and is available.

Yes it was a great match, a half hour long epic... alot of maneuvering for postion...plenty of tactics and skill involved...all in all what a tourney match is supposed to be like...rather than a 3 minute rush game with no tactics involved http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif We can most likely play the other two games this weekend.

Kansuke
08-23-2003, 16:07
L0L Mimesaka,

Well if ur connection held for more then 4 minutes I would have beat you that route, as this was the third attempt, I thought I'd make quick work of it, especially with your characteristic 7 missile army, which is easy to rush, but if you wanna try and rush me from that position see how easy it is http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif. When i set up in that position I always lead with Yari sams (something you missed to observe). Well I showed you in our last three games how to defend Nagashima so the result would have been the same http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

BTW you are assuming your gonna win your defence game, good on you. Hope you get to play the decieder.

No tactics, hehe, my tactic was to get your general, which I did, with my Yari Cav whilst holding your other troops, result: mission accomplished

I look forward to showing you how to attack the map, probably Tuesday.

I assume I'm going to win the defence because I'm optimistic by nature, though in our last game when I defended it was very close...

I too look forward to our next match.

Mimesaka has defeated Kansuke 2-1 in some very nice games today.

The first game, Kansuke counted on the weather being rainy, but all of the days were clear. The tiebreaker on Ironing Board was very close, it was decided when Kansuke missed one of Mimesaka's units of Yari sam and sent his Nag cav taisho around that side, it got tangled up in the Yari sam unit and routed.

It was a pleasure to meet your armies on the field of battle Sjakihata Akechi. The games were all very close with the first two going to the defender after some manovering and probing and general attempts to find some sort of weakness. Even my attacking army of archers with no muskets could not find a rainy day in Autumn to get an avantage.

If anyone does manage to beat the defenders on the map let us know. Id love to hear how to manage it.

Good luck to all who are still to play.

Edit to add this.
if its down to 3 how about a FFA best of 3 games with 3 points for winner 2 for second and 1 for last?
or have 2 games against each player and winner is based on heads. i.e who ever has the largest pot of head soup wins over all (no kensi or BFN)
I sort of like the idea of it not just going on wins which seem a bit harsh.
It could make for a very interesting set up. who can win but lose as few troups as possible. My 2 cents/pence/euro's worth.

Sasaki Kojiro
09-01-2003, 15:47
I don't like the idea of most kills winning for several reasons.

1. The game ends when the enemy army routs: sometimes your opponents army is routed all at once with only 5 or 6 hundred losses. This most often happens when one of the players is much better than than the other. Compare this to a battle between two equally matched opponents, in this battle the kills will be much higher.

2. Head count is just the number of men lost, not the value of men lost. I could move a unit of Hon 0 ca in and kill maybe 15 Hon 6 ND. Then say you sent a unit of yc after my ca and killed 20 of them. The 15 ND cost 400 koku while the 20 ca cost 80 koku.

We could have each player play the other two in the standard best of three that is used for rest of tourney, and then whoever has the best ration wins. For example if player 1 beats player 2 (2-0) and then loses to player 3 (2-1) his ratio
would be 3-2. Since player 3 beat player 1 who beat player 2 it would be reasonable to assume that he would beat player 2 as well, say (2-0). Then his record is (4-1) and player 2's record is (0-4). Thus player 3 is first (4-1), player 1 is 2nd (3-2) and player 2 is last (0-4). It's possible that they could all end up being tied, but unlikely.

btw celt. the way to beat the defender on nagashima is quite easy. the best way i have found in a 1v1 is to head through the right side woods and then turn left and attack up the hill. your men in the trees don't take any fire from stray bullets, and you force the defender to defend a SMALL slope instead of the wide long slope if you attack straight forward.

Well Shim and I played our tourney match, a VERY good game, I defended in the fog, which made for a rather disorganized battle. He used his cavalry well to force me to leave part of my army unprotected with no YS nearby and routed some of my muskets with a cav charge. However my Hon5w2 no-dachi proved to be too much for his infantry and my cav got into his muskets and when his taisho routed the game ended.
He says his strength is in attacking, and so he forfeits the other game.
Well, I must say the tourney was a lot of fun, and I hope everyone else enjoyed themselves as much as I did. Kas is organizing a 2v2 tourney, I hope to see everyone there.

Thanks for a great game,

*bows* to Shim.

This was the final match...I haven't seen Celtlan for months, and Pao disappeared for a while after I had won my attacking game...we thought it best to finish up the tourney since a new one is already being organized.

i thoroughly enjoyed playing you mime and i must say you are a very honorable player. but the reason i didn't play the second one is because i didn't want to be thrashed like i was the first time http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif anyhow. we shall meet again in the 2v2 tourney i believe http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

can i be runner up http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif i had to beat some of the best players in the community to be able to be thrashed by mime http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif and yes mime the aggony clan has focused more on team battles then we have on 1v1s. me and betou can know what each other is about to do without even talking. practice makes perfect http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
