This is probably a very stupid question, so my apologies. But I can't seem to get grouped armies to move in formation. I tried replaying the tutorials but couldn't find out what I'm doing wrong. When I group the whole army and left click and drag where I want it to go, all the units immediately go into column, and move that way to the destination, then stay in column Can you not move an army in formation by left clicking and dragging it where you want it to be?

Hold down the alt key while you click and drag, that should do it. And don't feel dumb, I recently leaned how to do this myself http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Also if you press spacebar it has a little ghost of where your units will be. Always useful

Hope I understand what your problem is. Here goes:
If you wish to preserve your entire deployment formation, you need to group the whole thing. You cannot click and drag multiple groups and have them stay in formation.
What to do is to hold ALT and click where you want your whole army to go. The deployment will stay intact, but must face the same direction it did when it started. If you want to turn your whole army, assign number groups to your original groups by pressing CTRL-SHIFT-# when the whole group is selected. This will allow you to select the units of that group by pressing ALT-Corresponding#. Now, this can be used well when you wish to wheel your whole army around. Make the whole army one big group and hold CTRL-Rightclick to change the facing of your army. When finished, re-group your original groups using the numbergroups.
