Could anyone point me to a guide for creating historical battles for Shogun?

The folders and files for the historical battles are in this folder

Total War\Shogun - Total War\battle\batinit\Historical Battles

Total War\Shogun - Total War - Warlord Edition\battle\batinit\Historical Battles

As far as I remember it's the same set up as mtw
One .bdf text file (battle description file)
Which is what it does funny enough . http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

It defines the factions the map and so on.

The other files will be .adf (Army description file)

This defines the units for the faction
the starting position , direction , troop numbers
and so on .

Then again it's been years since I played shogun
so I could be making it all up. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Have a look at the files and see if
it makes sence to you . It's in english so it should . http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
If not get back and one of us will tell you .
It's explained here somewhere but I don't know where.
