In my latest English campaign I decided to go down the good christian route, and it seems to be paying off.

All my provinces have high zeal ratings because my Inquisitors are buring my own (useless) generals, and not the populace.

Hell even one or two bad heirs have been burnt as a symbol to the world.

I had previously re-took Venice from the Turks with a crusade (the Turks had invaded via the sea, and had really offended the Pope) and that was a great success.

My King has a rank 7 influence and en equal piety rating and all was well untilt he Aragonese invaded me... So I counter by attacking Aragon, no response from the Pope. I then attack The last remnants of the Aragonese in Navarre, and the Aragon castle falls the same year... still nothing.

Then I assault the Navarre keep, and wipe out the line. and STILL Nothing

And then the Pope backs me in my war with Italy and the Germans... The Italian Heir was burned as a Heretic, and their King died trying to assault one of my castles. The HRE may be a bigger problem but they are so thinly stretched I managed to tak Lorraine from them without any argument from Mr Pope

I find this state of affairs really bizarre (Normally I'm the Pope's Number 1 target)

Anyone else have a game where the Pope took forever to react to your actions?

Uh if they attack you first, they are the ones receiving the warning not you.

I have been attacked in many games and often the moment I counter-attack The Pope sends a warning.

My Point is that I invaded with overwhelming force, attacked a few provinces, besiged a couple of castles... and Got away with it (and it took around 4 years to do)

My guess is at some point the Papacy had been overrun and there was a puppet Pope in power. As far as I know they do not excommunicate anyone or do anything else for that matter.

Trust me the Pope was still around, I tried to Burn him a few times with my 6 star Grand Inquisitor... Didn't work though.

The Pope's behaviour surelly is erractic. I've quit trying to understand how it will work. Sometimes it goes like we expect him to, if warrying more than to years then it's excom for sure. Othertimes it seems like he's living in a world of numbness or maybe he's just high on something (incense, maybe) and he doesn't give a s*** about the rest of the world. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smokin.gif

I try to keep a low profile at the beggining, but as soon as i muster some force, i couldn't care less about his holiness. He can whine all he wants, it just adds some spice to my campaigns. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I've noticed that when I've been a good Christian Mr.Pope is behind me rather than my enemy.

Been a modder I'm guessing that your Influence and Piety have something to do with Mr.Pope backing you, also your Christian actions may sway him in your favour, after all I know personally if I was Pope I'd back the holiest faction over the other (But knowing me I'd get involved in fighting also).

If you were the first faction (among those you are fighting) to ally with the Pope, he will often honor that alliance and just keep on supporting you the whole game. I have even had the Pope assist in my conquering of the Catholic world by helping me invade other provinces. This is one of the aspects I like so much about MTW, that the AI can behave SO differently in each game. Enjoy your freedom to conquer.

Were there any other catholic wars going on?
AFAIK the pope can only handle a warning at a single time, hence, if there was another faction with a warning, you are clear to atack since his attention is diverted for the moment. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Use this and enjoy Emperor http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Same thing happened to me and yes there were other wars going on. I think even the Pope was trading blows with the italians. I cannot swear it was the cause for the pope's lack of interest in my war with the french, I being the english, but found it odd that after more than 3 years no warning arrived.
Anyway a while later the pope was ousted and we all tore at each other at leisure for some 8 years till the next pope rebelled.
