I am running a campaign as the Aragonese right now. It is about 1170 or so and I control the entire Iberian Penninsula plus a few other errant territories.
My main problem is archers. I have nothing but the basic model archers. Is there anything I can decently upgrade to or am I stuck with this until I conquier Genoa or somewhere else that allows for special units?

Your stuck until the High Period begins (1205) and the Crossbows and Arbs make their entrance.
You know the Normal archers can be deadly when used correctly.

I am playing Aragonese too at hard level and I have found their starting position too dificult, all their neighbors have more and more developed provinces.
Finally I moded the game to give him valencia , and make Almughavars their unique unit.
What's your experience ?

I am not having too much trouble playing them. The Spanish got themselves squeezed between me and the Ahlomands big time and then the Egyptians rolled the Ahlomands up from behind pretty hard..
Before they could focus on me though they ended up in a very nasty war in Asia Minor against the Russians, Hungarians, and the Polish.
This gave me the breathing room to heavily reinforce Iberia. Now my penninsula is such a hard nut to crack that the Egyptians don't want any part of me and to the north the French are all powerful but too busy with the HRE to try anything.

Perhaps you could use mercenaries until you get xbows?

I hate crossbows. I much prefer archers for their faster rate of fire.
I could go for mercenaries. Right now my little trade empire has about 250,000 florins stashed away.
I am playing as the Aragonese on hard too. I took Navarre after about 4 turns and bribed El Cid in Valencia. I then rolled the Spanish. After some buildup and working at getting all Feudal troops, I rolled the Almos with the help of the Egyptians pounding on their other side. It is now 1140 and I have just taken Egypt after backstabbing my allies. I also kicked the Germans out of Toulouse which they had taken from the French but were unable to resupply. Meanwhile, the Turks and Byz are beating on eachother and are pretty even at this point, and the French are taking over Europe. As soon as Egypt is all mine, I will take out the French. I am the richest and have the largest army and I haven't even started trading yet. Soon though. I am really enjoying this campaign.
