View Full Version : Error with Shogun.icd file on startup
I just reinstalled Shogun for the hell of it, but I can't get it to run.
The little red box with the game name comes up, then the screen goes black like a movie or something is about to start, then the error message comes up, citing a failure with shogun.icd as the culprit.
I got ATI Raedon 9KPro, DX10, gobs of memory and speed and all that stuff.
Should I install the DX7 that comes with the game?
Does a patched version of Shogun address this problem?
Or is it just hopeless?
Thanks ahead of time for whatever help anyone can offer.

hmmm, havent seen an icd error in a while. the icd error basically means that the install doesnt like something about your hardware configuration or directx, and that comes down to doesnt like something about your drivers or directx. this is a sort of general error thing that basically tells you very little about what is actually going on... or not going on.
first off, directx 10? as far as i know we're only up to directx 9.0a as far as official releases from microsoft. is this a beta version? this is highly suspect as your culprit right there.
no, dont install directx 7. we know for a fact that stw works with versions up thru 8.1 and most games these days either require 8.1 or 9. you'd also have to know how to roll back 10 to an earlier version and that can be a pain in the arse. and, we dont even know if the directx un-install will work with rolling back a 10, if there is a 10.
if you're on windows xp, home or pro, you can pick an earlier restore point of before you had this directx 10 on your machine and try your install after rolling back directx that way and see if that works.
sometimes you can also fix icd errors through updating or even rolling back your drivers for various hardware.
sometimes running dxdiag will show an error in directx and upon fixing that the icd will go away.
i seem to recall that sometimes an icd error can show up with bad copy protection stuff interfering with an install. it can also show up from having too much stuff running in the background.
like i say, an icd error basically only means that the install didnt like something about your system. it's a fairly generic error message and often doesnt tell you all that much.
to try and isolate what's going on and what the icd error is pointing to, you can try a 'clean boot'. this might narrow down what's going on and allow you to fix something specific. to do a clean boot is more than i'm going to try and explain here, but i will point you to microsoft's knowledge base. the procedure is written up there. go to:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;310353
if none of that helps, you're going to need to post some more specific specs about your system and maybe a dxdiag report.

Pretty common problem. CA hates ATI cards. STW and MTW are the only installs of among about 50 titles that will crash my machine with 8500. They have done it on multiple OS installs...I've had to reinstall the OS because of MTW induced corruptions (very pi$$ed off about this.) Recently had a hell of a time with both STW and MTW installers crashing the OS. Intall 100 pieces of software (about 50 of them games) all work well...except CA titles. Back on topic: STW runs on my Radeon ViVo, but gives me the ICD error with any drivers in Win98SE on my 8500. Answer: MI pack works fine. Go figure. The ICD error is one of those insanely stupid problems with CA software. I don't know what it thinks is wrong. There is nothing wrong with the hardware, the problem is in the software you are trying to launch.
Suggestion for CA: hire someone who knows how to write install packages, and how to initialize hardware. Your present work is anything but robust. I've never seen any other title so prone to not even launching, and with no simple fix. Installers should not lock up. For all I know the problem is being caused by the copy protection.
