Ok I did a search and nothing like this came up so....

What is everybody's favorite faction and starting period and why?

I'm still undecided because I'm still learning everything. (Just go the game a week or two ago and never played Shogun)

I like the English because of the defensive value of the longbowmen. I like the Italians because they can get rid of that damned pope early on, plus they can build gothic knights. I also like the Spanish because they have rich lands and easily defendable borders on hte edges of what we know today as Spain. I just played Muslims (Egyptians)for the first time. I like the way you don't have to spen as much time building before you let the war machine loose...but their later units appear weak (havn't gotten that far though).

So...what's everyone favorites???

Easy, the Byz.

In SP they get to fight the Muslims and the Catholics, don't have to deal with the Pope, get a dose of Mongol Horde, and have some cool units.

The Varangian Guard are the best axemen in the game, the Pronoiai Allagion are one of the best all around cav, Kataphractoi, Naptha Throwers, and don't forget Byz Cav.

In MP the Byz are most enjoyable, almost unfairly so.

I've only played HRE and Spanish in the early era, so I'm am grossly under qualified to answer your question.

I only ever seriously play in the early era, and as I like a challenge I stay away from power house factions like the almohads and the HRE. I like the Italians because of the competition on all sides, the promise of a trade empire, the ultra cool gothic knights and italian infantry. English and French are always a laugh but in the end I'd have to say the turks. JHI, despite a long way off is temptation enough. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Personally: for just starting out, the Byz are good, just to learn game mechanics. Then the HRE to learn the politics of a powerful catholic faction.
