View Full Version : Help required with full Medmod version.
I have laid out most all of the things that will be in the mod in the first post of the Dungeon forum's "Medmod IV v3 Preliminary faction unit lineup" thread, http://www.totalwar.org/cgi-bin....5;st=25 (http://www.totalwar.org/cgi-bin/forum/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=5;t=8845;st=25)
This mod is going to be a huge undertaking, and I am going to need some substantial help with it, or else it could be several weeks before I even have a beta ready.
Prior modding experience is not necessary for most of the jobs, but if you *are* experienced in modding MTW, please peruse the entire list before emailing me, since I would prefer to match people to their abilities and experience wherever possible.
You can either post here to offer your help. If there is something in particular you want to do, please say so and I will give it to you, though I want to get experienced people for those jobs below where I mention that qualification.
1)The first thing I need is someone to take over all the textures work, now that we have most all of the unit lineup finished. I need someone experienced for this, since it can be quite a lot to get a handle on, and we don't need to get bogged down by too many errors once the mod-making machine gets cranked up, so to speak.
The good news is that there won't be very many units that will need to use new bifs, or even weapons, since visual continuity is one thing I want to keep in place while people get used to all the new names. This means that the Scottish Pikeman, for example, will use copies of all of the existing Pikeman's files, so that he looks just like the regular Pikeman. I will make a list of all the units that will have something unique about them, and what that will be, and leave it up to you to get it done however you want to.
*I will create a list of all the new units, with their individual file names, along with the new names for the existing units. Most all of the jobs will require this list, so I'll try and post it here and email to you as well.
2)This same outline will apply for the icons as well. This shouldn't be that difficult of a job, but it will be time consuming, with two or three different types of files for each new unit, so if someone wants to volunteer for this, it will be very appreciated by the rest of us.
3)Placing units in the startpos files is going to be a big task, at least for the High and Late eras where there needs to be more than generic units placed everywhere. This is another important task that I need someone with experience for, and if that seems odd to you, then you have never tried to place the damn things.
I would really like it if someone stepped up and volunteered to do as much of the entire startpos files as they could. I will probably need to trade some detailed e-mails with whomever wants this job anyway, but I would really prefer someone who has done some substantial modding for MTW, and is familiar with the 1.1 version, and hopefully the 2.0 version.
The other things needed for the Startpos files will deal with placing buildings and making all the stuff needed for all the new minor-Major (meaning playable) factions. This might be a job that requires a "woman's touch", but I'll probably take most anyone who has some good experience adding these types of things to the game.
4)The buildings needed for every new unit need to be written up so that they can be pasted into the units text. This also goes into the not difficult but time-consuming category, since, like the icons, new units will have the same building requirements as the unit it most closely mirrors, and I will make any special adjustments to the list once you send it to me.
5)We will also need to create a province list for every unit in the game, that can be pasted into the units text. This is going to be a fairly simple but tedious task, with attention to detail all the way through. I have the list pretty much done already- it's in the Medmod spreadsheet for 1.84, but I will go over it again and send it to you so you can get started.
7)There will have to be a lot of things added to the item lists and descriptions-type texts in the Loc/eng folder.
This will be stuff for all the new things in the game, from units to concepts to faction histories and descriptions to odd stuff like the Merc good and the Inn's new role. This is another job that will be very time-consuming, perhaps the most time-consuming of all except for maybe the textures work.
Experience would be a plus here, but I can probably email you with instructions on how to use the 1.85 version's additions as a guide.
*I know there are a lot of historians who frequent the boards here; well, this is a great opportunity to share your knowledge with the rest of us. Reading and working on this type of stuff is something I love about these mods, and everyone who has ever helped with this segment of the Medmod's has seemed to enjoy it immensely. (just don't take on more than you can handle) The descriptions, etc. don't have to be done until the mod is ready for full release, but the placeholders need to be started on right away, so think of it as a little work before pleasure.
I am probably forgetting some stuff, but they always become apparent sooner or later.
Right now, I want to aim for Monday week-after-next, the 28th or so, to get a beta out, which means I would like to have all these jobs done by the end of next weekend. If you want to help, but don't know if you will have the time, go ahead and email me, in case there aren't enough volunteers for everything.
Most all of the jobs can probably be done in an afternoon/evening or two on the weekend, or by taking an hour a night for a week or so.
The learning curve is pretty flat for the ones where I didn't ask for experienced people, so once you do a couple of things, it goes pretty smoothly from there.
Don't forget that you can always email me regarding problems or questions, and if something comes up that is going to leave you unable to finish the job in a timely manner, just let me know and we'll see what to do then. Different people have different amounts of free time, so if someone gets finished early, they might take on the rest of your job, too, or else I can finish it. I would just like to get the bigger jobs started on by the end of this weekend.
(And don't tell anyone, but these things usually take about 50% longer than planned, so don't let time get in the way of your enthusiasm.)

If people (like me) are going to help with stuff like the loc/eng/names.txt, then everyone will need to know exactly what the units will be called in the units text. In other words, what their primary key is.
I think since you will be doing the units text work, you will have to decide on these (shouldn't take more than 5 mins) then we can all stick to them.
Once I have this list, I would be happy to do the loc/eng/names.txt
I know you'd rather I emailed about this, but right now it is /much/ easier for me to stick to forum posts and the list in question should be public.
Well, it's up to you. Cheers.

Like Godzilla said, just post here and let me know what would be helpful. I am not an experienced modder, but I want to help, so let me know what would be easier, but time consuming.
This is also my ONE HUNDRENTH POST http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Looks good, how are you guys gonna figure the kings names, historically and all?

Yelping - may I suggest some changes to your list:
"Knecht" is singular
"Knechte" is plural
"Leute" is plural, there is no singular for this word in German. Tell me what you want to say and I will suggest something else.
I am glad you showed the list here for people to check.
I hope this helps.

Thanks Templar, this is why I posted it up. I'll edit the post above to show the changes.
I think I'm going to go with Dienstleute Soldat for the singular. That seem ok?

Quote[/b] (WesW @ July 19 2003,13:33)]5)Oh, if someone knows how to add a new good to the game, please do one for the Mercenary good and send it to me. Please.
do you mean tradable goods?
if so the following sections of the startpos file apply,

"Dienen" means serving. "Dienstleute" means servant or people who serve someone for money or other gains; for instant, the "Dienstmann" is in English the "Porter". A close translation for soldiers would be the English "mercenaries" or in German "Soldner". Can you tell me what kind of troops you want to name?

Well, WesW has them down as Mounted Sergeants. I thought they were Teutonic foot troops, but clearly we have to stick to the beta unit list.
EEUURAAH.
Here is the Master Unit List for the Medmod IV v3.
It took me 10-12 hrs. to work this all out. I tried to provide the basic info needed for all the available jobs. You will also probably need to have printouts of the 1.84-5 unit sheets from the Medmod stats spreadsheet, and the Viking units sheet, which is available in the v2 mod, or from my webpage, to use as references.
Note: The file names, like the list YG posted above, would be for the new and re-named units. New units would need both columns, while re-named ones will only need the right-hand column.
YG has also used the correct syntax- no abbreviations or spaces in the names.
Unit names:
The unit work will basically fall into three categories: New units, re-named units and modified units. Indiviual jobs may only deal with one or two types of units.
Note: Major faction associations are listed for units that don't share the same name as their faction. When making out their faction availability list, descriptions, etc., please keep in mind that Minor factions also use most all of these same units, as detailed in the unit lineup post.
New units: (59)
These units need everything- file entries, references and descriptions. All jobs dealing with units will involve these units.

Lancer, you can start on the new units' pics (icons). There are three kinds, and they are located in the Battle/unit_icons and Campmap/info_pics and Campmap/review_panel folders. You can use the 1.85 mod as a reference.
Just copy and re-name the pics of the existing unit referred to in the new unit's description line.
When you get done, if you wanted to make game end bifs for all the new minor factions, that would be another item off my list. All you need do is copy an existing faction's bif.
If anyone else wants to join in, go ahead and post here if you would rather do that than emailing me. If any of you lurkers out there would like to help, please don't hesitate to contact me, since I can give you all the info you need via email.
Sorry if I missed it but are you having Genoese crossbowman? Whilst I don't know that much about this thing, they seemed to be common mercenaries around the high period (been reading Bernard Cromwell's books http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif ). http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/dizzy.gif

Since the primary keys of the units must match up in the various files, will we be using the versions I put in my name list as the master?
If work has started on other files and doesn't match up with what I've put, I'll have to change it all. Changing the odd thing is ok, but if they are too different it will cause real problems.
I'll edit in the finished name list here, make any changes people think are needed, then I can send you everything there in a text file so it can just be pasted in later.
Well, to work.
EDIT: All done for now. Couple of things. Firstly I couldn't find an original feudal bowmen entry to rename. Secondly, some of the units in my names addition are no longer in your lineup (like Landsknecht sword). Can you confirm that they are out of the mod?
I can send you a complete names.txt with my addition and for rename jobs, previous original entries removed.
I'll look over the descriptions text and see how long placeholders will take if you want.

Are the names of the Units in the Original files match your names, or am I gonna need a list before I cant start match the pics.
YP, the Master List is the master list. Discrepancies and such were the reason I stated in the lineup thread that I needed to get my list up before anyone started work on the text files.
I can confirm that this is The list, at least for all but the Muslim factions, and we can come back to those later if needbe.
You'll need to edit your names post with the corrected names. Your list will be used along with mine in various ways for the different jobs- sometimes as a reference, and sometimes as a template to add things to, such as descriptions.
I was worried that prehaps some of the Viking units were somehow re-names of existing ones. I checked to confirm that the Housecarle, the 1.1 Viking entry, was still in the game but no longer used anywhere.
For the Feudal Bowmen, just take it out. I will expand the territory for recruiting Bulgarian Brigands to include the Baltic provinces. I almost did this to start with.
Thanks for getting on this so quickly, btw, so we caught this early.
As for other Loc files- go ahead and get started. The sooner we get things done, the better.
Now that you have the master list in text form, it will be mostly a matter of pasting things into the appropriate sections, so it should go pretty guickly, at least considering how many units there are to do.
Lancer, dude, read over your sentence before you post it next time. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
Here is the procedure I have developed for doing this. It will seem a little strange the first time you read it, but once you try it you will see how efficient it is.
What you will do, for example, is first take the SwissPikemen pic from the Battle/UnitIcons folder, copy it to a temp folder, and re-name it to TercioPikemen. Then copy the Tercio pic to the folder you will be emailing me. Now take the original Tercio pic, re-name it to MercenarySwissPikemen, and copy it to the email folder.
Repeat until you have finished all the Swiss Pikemen clones, and then move on to the next unit. I ordered the pics into groups so that it would be easier for you to see which units and how many copies you needed.
Btw, even though the two files-types in the Campmap folder are both bifs, you can't interchange them. (I saw where someone else tried to simply make two copies of one file, and paste them into both folders. It didn't turn out too well.)
Also remember that you only have to do the new units, and not the re-named or modified ones.
BDC, the Italian Sailors are the unit you are looking for. It's easier to see this in the unit lineup thread, and I would like to keep this thread confined to questions about what needs to be done and how, like Lancer's post.
Btw, I haven't received any email volunteers yet, so if you want to help with something, I could certainly use it.
I really didn't think it would be a problem getting volunteers, knowing how many people use the mod and all. (I dl'd the 1.6 version from 3D a couple of weeks ago to check some stuff, and saw that it had been dl'd from them 950 times, and who knows how many people got it from my site.) In my other mods, the jobs were given out over the course of weeks rather than all at once, but I never had any problem at Apolyton finding people who wanted to give something back to the mod, so to speak.
It may be that a few of you can get everything else done if you jump on it like YG has, but I am going to have all I can do between posting here and working on the spreadsheets, which I haven't even got to yet due to how long it took me to make the master list.

Only placeholders and generic ones at that, but that's all you need for an alpha copy I guess. This is just the bare minimum required to get the units working, so renamed units will still have the old descriptions and so on.

Ok, I found this one, received at 7:30 CDT (I have had my email connected all day.) I have not received any others, and there was no attachment with this one. I had accidentally deleted it with the spam from my inbox. You need to put Medmod in the title somewhere so that it goes to the Good Mesasages folder I created.
I still check over the inbox before deleting things, since I still get mod-related mail pretty regularly that doesn't fit one of the Good message rules, but I missed this one and had to look in the Deleted box.
I should have noticed attachments to any of the Inbox mail and looked at them closely, so I don't know why they would not have arrived, unless perhaps my virus program is catching something in them.
Wes
While at home bored with my broken ankle, I checked out your thread for help on the med mod. SO I whacked together these files for ya. Theyre all the pics u you needed for the new units you put. Hope theyre all ok and useful not sure if anyone else has done them but if not then here they are.
Will help out some more if I get time. Back to work at end of week. So will see what happens.
Hope this helps
Shand994
PS Just extract using folder names
I had to send them in 3 separate emails as they were too big to put all in one email on hotmail. Please let me know if you get them
Also, Shand, I if these are the icons, I hope you either contacted Lancer regarding your doing them, or that he hasn't started on them yet. I mean, I'm very happy to receive them, but I would hate to have you guys both doing the same thing.
YG, that's great work to get those done this quickly. If you would, attach all of it to the end of the Medmod NoUnits Changes.txt. It doesn't have any designation in the file name, but I added some Viking stuff to the end of it, which will let you know it's the right one.
I am going to try and put all the Loc work in the Changes.txt so that it's easier to keep up with. This will also allow players with non-English versions of the game to easily copy this portion into their own Changes.txt, and I can even attach a copy of the original file for people who decide to stop using the mod.
Before I forget: I made the Mercenary good last night, after somemore help from Barocca, so that little item is off the list.
A_B offered to do what he could on the Textures work, and
Kekvit said she would help with the Startpos files.
I had really been hoping they would be able to join in, since both those jobs need experienced people.
If YG can get the rest of the Loc stuff done this week, and I get the pics in, then we should be in good shape, except for my part.
I have been spending all my time getting everyone else started and answering questions on the forums, so the spreadsheet work still hasn't begun. I may not try to be too picky with the exact stats of the units for the beta, so maybe it won't take long. I did a good bit of work a few months ago on the 1.1 version, making adjustments to CA's base values to get them closer to my ideas, so that will be a big step out of the way.

I checked my mail settings, and I had them set to delete from the server anything with "pics" in the subject line. I thought that I had this rule set to move them to the deleted folder.
Send them to me one more time, please. Surely I'll get them this time.
I'm sorry about this, but Barocca told me this type of stuff is common now for people with public emails. I must get upwards of a hundred pieces of junk a day now. About half gets caught by Hiwaay's spamblocker, but the rest is up to me. From what Barocca said, he must get a lot more than that.
A year or so ago, I only got a couple a *week* that got past the spamblocker. I had heard that a lot of the Silicon Valley guys that have lost their jobs these last few years have gone into spamming to try and get income. Plus, Congress just enacted a law that is going to pretty much put telemarketers out of business, and this is contributing to the spam flood as well.

Hi, Duke.
One job that still needs to be done is to make out a text file with the buildings that will be needed for all the new and re-named units. I will take these and paste them into the units text. These units will use the same buildings as the existing unit they are modelled after, with a few exceptions, so this won't be a difficult job. It will be a little tedious, though. If you can get it sent in by Monday, that would be fine.
I am going to group the units by unit type when I make the units text, much like I grouped the new units for the Master list. You need to order your list in the same way, so that I can slip them in one after another.
It needs to look like

Tercio Pikemen- TOWN_WATCH4
Just email it to me when you get it done.

No, it's just not coming through for some reason. Upload them here and have Barocca put them in the beta section. He can let one of us know when that's done and I can get them.
I now have the spreadsheet made up, so if someone wants to take this, that will be all of them.

Hi Wes.
Right, ive done (i think) what you wanted me to do, but i am now on the renamed units.
You say that you wish to add things to these units so shall i just do the building requirements for the standard unit or add what i think is best.
Eg. Herbeen (Viking karls) is ROYAL_PALACE, SWORDSMITH.
Shall i add perhaps armourer for example, or leave it as it is and let you do this?
Also, what about the generic crusader units (hospitaller, templar etc). Shall i do building requirements for these or are they going to be units just found in crusades?
http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
Great, Duke, just send in what you have done. If there needs to be additions, etc. I can do it when I am pasting them into the units text.
The reason I wanted this is because the CA spreadsheets don't automatically produce building requirements for units like they do the stats and such. I will take your list, and just paste it in as I go down the file. This way, I don't have to stop and look up each unit type, and try and remember if they had any exceptions or whatnot. This type of stuff just wears your brain out after a while, and since I am usually about brain-dead when I get to the final steps of the mod, anything that saves me time and mental effort at the end is actually a big help, no matter how trivial it was to construct your part of it.
Oh, Shand, Barocca, let me know when those icons are up.

Well, I am not sure when the beta will be out for testing. I have a list of ten steps that I still need to complete before the units text will be set to go, assuming I haven't left out anything. I spent two or three hours Saturday studying the CA spreadsheets and entering in a few basic alterations for the mod. However, it became apparent that I had made so many adjustments to so many things over the months that it would be easier to simply paste things into the 1.85 text and work from there. I would also have had to do a bunch of stuff to faction priorities, plus still enter a lot of stuff by hand. Perhaps if I had been using the spreadsheets all along....
Anyway, it will just hinge on whether or not I hit a good spell with my pain in the next couple of days so that I can get this banged out. A_B and Kekvit are still working on their respective parts of the mod, too, and A_B's part is particularly large, but hopefully they can get their work in sometime soon.
After I put it all together, the debugging will start. With any luck, the bugs will be easy to find and correct, and I can get the mod posted soon. If not, it may be a while, and I may post the mod for courageous souls to download and try .i.d'ing the bugs I couldn't correct.
In the meantime, I have made a small attempt at humor with one of the Rome screenshots (http://wes.apolyton.net/br5.jpg) available at .com.
For some reason, the pic won't come up if you enter the address directly into your browser. Anyone know why?
Looks like it's all going well, if I knew anything about modding I would offer to help but as it is I don't so would just be a liability. I'll help play about with the beta when you are ready with it though. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

Hi ya Wes, hope you're feeling better and doing well with the mod. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
Just to reiterate, if you need anything else that is simple done for you, i will have some spare time in a couple of days.
Just post here to let us know.
BTW, hope what i done before was good enough. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
Well, I spent all afternoon yesterday on the mod, and I think I can get it ready for testing with another afternoon's work. Perhaps I can do that Saturday and start testing. Of course, with a mod this big, and no way to test it before everything is in, there is really no way to tell how long it will take to debug.
I have been getting more and more excited about the mod as I have had to immerse myself in its details for the modding process. And as the English and Byzantines seem to be the most popular factions to play, they are also shaping up to be the most nuanced (sp?) and challenging to play.
The English will have to get their knights from the mainland, their longbows from Wales and England, and most their infantry from the Highlands of Northumbria and Scotland. Other infantry and light cav will have to come mostly from Ireland. (Billmen and Fyrdmen are about the only English-specific units that you can get anywhere.)
The Byzantines also have region restrictions on almost all of their units. I'm not sure how the AI will manage this- it may be pitiful, but challenging the human is what I am after right now.
When I get finished with the units text, I will post the Excel and text files I have developed for modding, so that you guys can start studying the setup. This is not going to be a mod that anybody is going to be able to play competently without studying their faction first. Knowledge of the AI factions you meet in battle will not be as crucial, other than referencing their units to see what 1.85 units they mirror, so you shouldn't be overwhelmed.
Duke, I am going to need someone to make linked Excel pages for all the factions once I get the current Master file completed and posted. This will be like the Medmod stats file currently included in the 1.85 mod, if you want to use that as a reference. I think most everyone, including me, will be referencing these faction sheets with this mod, since every faction will be so different.
Pablo, others, the unit descriptions still need to be coming in.
I have not heard back from Misplaced Aggie, so I still need someone to write faction histories which reflect both the changes to provincial ownership from 1.85 and the unit changes from this version.
And this doesn't even get into the new factions. They are going to need their own histories, game-end bifs, Loc lists of names, etc., and a *ton* of stuff for the startpos files dealing with leader placement, leader settings, faction colors, religion, personalities, region ownership and who knows what else.
I really need someone with experience in adding factions to help with the startpos files. I had hoped that A_B could do that, but he is still getting settled in with a new job, so if one of you other guys would care to step in, it would definitely be a big help.
You guys wouldn't need the mod's startpos files to get started on this, since it will mostly be making one line or file for each faction, and then pasting them into the mod's files or folders. The names of these factions are already listed in the unit lineup thread. The only thing you wouldn't have is a list of the provinces owned, and those will be included in the mod's Excel file.
