View Full Version : Request for MOD with new factions
I uploaded a simple edited crusader unit and build text files that enabled some of the new units in VI for all periods, enabled all catholic factions to crusade, and added a pagan shrine. I was amazed to see the flood of messages and requests, and downloads this generated. A common theme was the desire of many people to have more factions to play with. Most people want a basic early campaign MOD without huge changes that adds a bunch of new factions to it.
There are many posts on other forums asking for new *complete* MODS that feature new factions. I get a fair amount of messages and email from people asking me for this, particularly from some of the many smaller niche forums out there.
The fact is just about everyone wants as many factions as possible, not just recycled old factions with new names. Yes, I am sure that the upload will be a big one, BUT, I am also sure that there will be legions of people like myself downloading it in spite of the large size.
Suggestions of "do it yourself" modding ignores the fact that this is difficult for most people that either don't do MODS or do very light modding. Giving instructions or guides is not productive for these people. These are people that just want to play the MOD without the frustration of editing or modifying content.
Having a complete MOD on Totalwar.org is going to attract a LOT of new people to the site and the forums. This is something that the ORG will have that will be unique and 'first'. I will be pleased to point people to the home page in the other forums that I participate in.
I hope someone rises to the challenge.

I agree, there needs to be a new mod with the new factions out soon. I dont want to be told to make it on my own, because if I wanted to make my own I wouldn't be posting here http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif . It would be nice if it was done this year, unlike the others, which look like they are gonna take forever.

I know there are many reasons why people 'mod'. But from a user perspective, long drawn out "mods in progress" make no sense to me. There is a lot of interest in MTW mods right now, but ROME is rapidly approaching, and people's interest (and my own) will change as this date gets closer and closer.

If they dont make sense to you what is your solution? like you stated dont tell people "do it yourself" thats exactly why people support the many mods in progress they are complex in many ways and the average modder could not do it.Do you think something like a "Complete Mod" would not turn into a time consuming project? if it is to be done right it surely will, planning, preparation, actual modding and testing is by nature a time consuming process if you ever do a total conversion mod maybe you will understand better.

I'm sure you'll see plenty of simple MOD's adding factions now that the CTD problem has been resolved, as for "complete" MODs, they take time and effort the person/s personal life obviously comes first, but thankfully most of these MOD's are released bit by bit so you don't get it all at once.

I'm working on one which you might like (see Mod Descriptions). You'll have to be patient though.

I merely stated that interest in MTW is going to wane after Rome is released just like it did with Shogun. From my perspective, it makes more sense to release a complete mod now while interest is high with MTW rather than after Rome is released. I am sure that there will be users that will continue to play MTW mods after Rome is released. I also think that the majority of the users will gravitate over to Rome, with a niche element continuing to play MTW. This trend has already happened with Shogun.
As I stated, this is from a "user perspective" not a MOD developer perspective, and it is my opinion. I also stated that everyone has their own reasons for modding. You might want to re-read my post and ask yourself if your aggressive reply was truly warranted.

I apologize if you regard my response as aggressive this was not my intent, I was merely trying to point out that mods such as those being done now are labor intensive and so would a complete mod as the request was made for plain and simple . What I did not understand was the way you said "They make no sense to me" and like I replied if you were to do one yourself you would understand better. That is all I meant to convey again I apologize I did not mean to offend you. Regards LOS

In all fairness MTW will still have interest that is large enough for these MODs til the exact day RTW is released, which is a LONG way away and it leaves plenty of time for MTW 'complete' mods.

There is one MOD that I think could be done very quickly, Grell's First Crusade. All that needs to be done is adding Lysander's fix for the CTD error. The new factions are there and it is a great MOD. Grell has left this up to the users to apply the fix. I tried doing it but screwed something up and had to reinstall MTW. I am now a bit gun shy. Someone more knowledgeable than me is going to have to do it.

Yes Turbo,
Grells First Crusade needs the fix, and I also agree with you that people are gonna stray away from the MTW game and start mastering the RTW game. If poeple want to work very long and hard on there mod, more power to them, but I just want a mod that doesn't change the aspect of playing, but just a different time period, not Napoleon, and different units and factions to match that time period, hell make a completly fake mod, with fake factions, just nothing that will be released after the RTW game is, that would be a waiste of time for the modders and the players in my opinion. I am very appreciative to the modders out there for presenting there mods to us, it works both ways though. The modders like to "show off" there work, which is a good thing, while the players like to experience the different what the modders are showing off. I love modding and modders alike, but I just want a mod that simply fixes the CTD problem. Instead of making some enormous mod with CTD problem fixed, just implement the CTD fix into some of these great mods that have already been made.
