an impossible but interesting idea:
For each faction there'd be a player who would be a leader of it. Then he would have his subordinates, who'd also be players. And all the way down to the (including) single soldier, would be players? No AI or such? All except the soldiers would have a "standard" TW strategy view, but the soldiers would be in something like a FPS game (like jedi knight 2 and co) and would get orders from their superiors? People could desert and all the stuff they really do in the army. With time they would get experience and more hit points and everything a RPG offers, but would stay in the FPS mode, until there would be a need for another officer, when they'd be promoted.
It would almost have to be 2 games to incorporate all that, but also, it could be made somewhat like Operation flashpoint, just with more ranks than officer and soldier.

A lot of people have this idea, but the problem lies in the fact that few people want to take orders in an FPS game. Would it be very fun to be in the reserves or the 4th rank of a pike phalanx? In order to make them follow the commander's wishes, they'd have to incorporate strict control measures which could be abused by jerks in nearly infinite ways.

its bad enough trying to get people to work as a team in team based fps multiplayer like C&C Renegade... and your expecting us to follow some unknown guy who is king? (and may not know what hes doing) Constant Civil War would be a certainty http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif

Hell, I would give my virtual life for my king. He didn't get to be king by sucking at the game, did he? And a way to control the ranks would be permadeath, or semi-permadeath (maybe 2 lives?). That oughta stop those bastards from jumping out of phalanx formation.

I do believe Savage is something like this.
A FPRTS.

Gamespot's Savage stuff (http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/savage/index.html)

Indeed, savage is going to be an interesting game. And the screeshots look awesome. But what about WoW?

Savage is not the first game in this genre...

I can remember at least two games that had that basic idea as well, dating back to around 1997 or so. The first one was a really brilliant game taking place on the planets and moons in our solar system in the 60s and 70s. Naturally it was the US vs the Soviets. Another one was not so brilliant but it contained a more mainstream RTS feature. Can't remember the names, but both worked on the aspect of scrap from destroyed enemies.

Yes... I think so... Yes that was it

I really loved the first movie. You know the one where the guy talks about 'all those people that vanished' while you see the 'Eagle' on the moon as it zooms out to reveal an entire base right behind a rock outcropping. That really set the pace of the game.
