I may have missed something but I just don't know how to save the game when in battle...

You can't save in battle. That would really make it too easy.

I usually do a quick save (ctrl+s) often just in case I screw something up then do a proper save when I'm done for the day.

Why save just so that you can retry if you screw up? It's all part of the learning curve and the satisfying feeling you get from returning from near annihilation is uncomparable (well... you know what I mean http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif).

Fair enough if you've been playing a while and it might crash (happened once or twice to me) but to replay a disastorous battle? Where's the learning from mistakes? You'll improve faster if you don't.

I don't save every turn, more like every few years and I don't replay lost battles. If the tide turns against me and I am going to get wiped out I don't see the point in continuing and having to start a new game. Yes I have had long campaigns where I have come back from the brink but I don't have the time to spend on another.

I have played it through several times so I like to experiment which often goes wrong.

Save often. Especially at a critical turn, ie; invading a province.
I have also used going back later to choose an alternative course to see how that may have worked out in the long run.

I only save whenever I'm ready to stop playing for the day. 'Tis how all the REAL samurai play.

This business of saving or playing Iron Man really sorts out the men from the boys. I normally I ask my mum what I should do. :-)

Catiline,

Iron man = no restoring? That is what it means in other communities at least. If so, well - I do play the occasional Iron Man game, but prefer not to since I still enjoy learning where mis-steps are.
Qapla!

Well, my internet protection picked up an attempted attack last night while I was playing, next thing I know Shogun has crashed and I lost a year and a bit of play (nothing too serious, no major battles, could have been a lot worse).

I'm saving a lot from now on, and remembering to disconnect from the net when I'm not using it.
