I just started training my assassins by pumping out a bunch of emmisaries and having my assassins murder them. Now they all have 4 stars which should make them better killers and less likely to be caught right? Is there a maximum valor they can have...they seem to be stuck on 4.
Just curious if any one else is in the habit of doing that. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif

The gains of valor tend to drop off when you hit four star and you need to hit harder targets to progress.
I have had a six star assassin before, but some guys have said they have managed to get a seven star one, that I have yet to do.
I do not know what the limit is.

I believe the assassins work the same way in Medieval as they did in Shogun. That is, they gain ranks in the same way as generals.
rank kills(victories for generals)
1 1
2 2
3 4
4 8
5 16
6 32
Killing higher ranked emissaries will count for more points.
hmmmm... kill my own units?? I didn't think of that.
But they don't all start at lvl 0? I've seen assassins at lvl 4 and had never sent them on a mission.

The only danger really with assassinating your own units is the possibility of revolt and distemper.
However, I am not really sure if this can be brought about through emmisary assassination.
Usually my progression goes Foreign Emissaries-Foreign Holy Men (especially Muslim if I am Christian and visa versa) followed by Inquisitors and such.
A moderate step up in difficulty helps bring them along, but make sure you track your assassin's movements, as trying to kill someone in their own country is much much harder, especially with border forts, which are something the probability calculator doesn't seem to keep track of.

a quick way to up your assassins is to get two and have them target each other. no matter who wins, you'll get an improved killer. afterwards, the survivor can start going after enemies.
using your own men (aside from assassins) to improve your assassins is risky, and money could be better spent on upgraded taverns instead.

There is also using a priest / bishop as bait in some exposed province to bring the other faction's assassins to your' assassins. You lose the occassional priest that way but I've gotten 4 valors assassins that way.

As Soloy pointed out in MTW VI you can just upgrade the taverns to get assassins with more valor. No killing needed.

soly's suggestions sounds like a Highlander deal - there can be only one.

for some reason, i find it humorus to imagine two assassins sent to assassinate each other. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif

I tried sending them after each other but too many times a newbie assassin killed my 3 star. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/pissed.gif
Yeah and I just bought VI yesterday and got the tavern upgrades.

Did you send the 3-star after the newbie or the newbie after the 3-star? Or both?

Perhaps you should view it as training with real ammunition.
I hate using assasins to difficult to keep track off, but I think I will try it now. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wacko.gif
