Yippee I finally have Scotland working as a new faction in early (with Lowland Pikes and some Pictish units) I have a problem that I need an opinion for. Scotland is really rather difficult to play as so far. They are dirt poor and with the units that I give them (2 pikes, 1 Scottish Noble, 2 Clansmen and a Pict XBOW) they are losing almost 400 florin per turn. The English (sneaky bastards) retreat until they hit Mercia or Wessex then turn and fight. What would be the best way to make the Scots a viable faction? When I simmed through a while as another faction, the Scots took down to Mercia but then succumbed to a rebellion and counter-attack by the English and were wiped out in 100 years on two successive campaigns.

You have a few options to get Scotland up and running financially, try increasing the Value of the province in startpos province attributes this will give you more of a return on your farming and you could also add a few more trade goods to the province or perhaps a resource like Iron or Gold, it might not be historically accurate but it is a solution none the less. Also in regards to the Units you could edit the Prod file to reduce upkeep costs and such. LOS

Adding trade goods like Fish and increasing the basic income is a good idea.

Another idea would be to give them northumbria and/or ireland.
Again, the scots having ireland definatly isn't historically correct, but when historical correctness fights gameplay, gameplay WINS (should) everytime. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

I think you shouldn't give them Ireland, what would happen to the Irish? Northumbria wouldn't be bad since, historically(correct me if I am wrong) the scots wanted Northumbria, and always tried to get it.
I believe Historically Correct creates perfect Gameplay, so IN MY OPINION gameplay "plays" off of the Historically Correctness in MTW.
But hey Duke,
It is a great idea, and should be considered. The Irish and Scottish were kind of buddies for a while anyway.

OK, I added Iron and Wool to Scotland and started them with 2 ships, this lets them trade immediately with either Skagerrak or the Channel. I also upped the income that it produces. They can hold their own now and will occaisionally move on England or Denmark. One sim-through game last night the mighty Scots erased all traces of England and then moved on to Northern France. They built a small trading empire, from the Baltic to the Iberian peninsula. I think I may have them just about right. Their units are still a bit weaker than most Catholics, but they get Xbows in early and they do get pikes as well in place of spearmen and seargents. I am going to try and add Bohemia as a Heretic faction next and then probably Flanders or one of the Orders, either the Teutonic Order based in Prussia or a Heretic Templar in the south of France.

Knight Yellow,
I am definitely planning on releasing it as a mod probably at some point over the weekend. I won't get to much more of a chance to test though.
Pyhhricvictory, what's the word on your Scottish faction mod? I'd love to give it a try.

It is still on my computer waiting to get an internet connection at home. Mine went down in s storm the other day, along with phone, and it has not worked as of yet. I can use the phone, but the internet is running at 14.4 kbps and I can't get anything to upload. It is supposed to be fixed by this weekend and I will get it up as soon as I can.
I remember the horrors of dial-up *shudders*. Believe me when I tell you I feel your pain
Can't wait to try your mod http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Historically the Scots near enough get wiped out anyway I suppose you could give them more buildings to start with and then give them more money to start with, realistically though they should only be invading Ireland, and at a point Northumbria.
