I'm playing as the former Eastern Roman Empire, and attempting to annex the old western provinces, but the Pope keeps reappearing out of no where with unbelievably large and well equipped forces. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/eek.gif
Is there a mod or command line switch to remove this particularly annoying and pointless game mechanic?
Additionally, is there anyway to switch off 'out of context' rebellions in 200% loyal garrisoned provinces?

i dont kow but i agree he must die
The Pope never dies, he will always reapear. Because without the pope no crusades can be declared, therefore conquoring the Papal states and Rome will get u the wrath of all the Catholic nations. in my longer games i usualy just surround the pope, then i move in once everybody is done for. Thats the only easy way of defeating him i know
Good luck http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

There are some good Pope killing strategies in my guide here (http://www.totalwar.org/cgi-bin/forum/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=15;t=9203), in fact His Holiness has his own section. I should warn you that the guide's a wee bit long, I hope it helps.

i often have the pope attack me with large forces, and generally, its a survival game unless ive moved large amounts of troops there before, then i might try and win. so kill him i say
the guy needs to calm down and let me get on with my path to godlike status throughout europe.
