microsoft recently announced a new directx version, 9.0b. the reason for this is that there is a security hole in EVERY single directx version before this. you can check the microsoft site for the exact security issue. i heard this news on tech tv, so i'm fairly confident it's true, but check it out for yourself.
a security hole basically means your system is subject to attacks and hacks while online. and because this one is in every directx version prior to dx 9.0b, a LOT of you are at potential risk to this, particularly if you're not behind some sort of firewall, proxie, or protected router.
check out the microsoft update site for more details.
