How are elephants in the game going to be delt with. It doesnt seem that it would be easy to put counters in for them espically ones that would be accurate, such as blowing horns at them or creating hole in the line. Thanks for any answers http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

Seriously though, in the absence of special units like burning pigs long spears should suffice against the brutes. I sincerely hope CA takes the more historical route and makes elephants more of a dread inspiring psychological weapon than a four legged tank of the ancient world. There are a number of military history amateur experts on this forum who have already decried the use of martial pachyderms as a blitzkrieg-like weapon.

I think i will use elephants like i use Cavalry today. Forget the head long charge, that just wastes elephants. I'll send mine around the side to crash into the rear of the troops.

Javalin, sling and bow armed light infantry often countered elephants very well by panicing them (to the point where elephants often needed their own light infantry escort). Cavalry generally did very badly (horses were scared of them) and close order infantry could go either way.
Pigs were rarely used, as far as I am aware.
Elephants seem to be have used either as impact troops to break close order infantry, or in a defensive role to support infantry that would otherwise be vulnerable to cavalry. The main strength of elephants was probably psychological.

Elephants may not have been effective Tiger Tanks, but it makes a great visual.
Frankly if the Nazi Tiger II or Panthers had inteligence, they would have made lousy tanks too.
Elephants seem too unwieldy for flanking. I want them were they can inspire fear. Behind my lines, looking pretty and hosting mobile archer platforms.
I bet they would have been great at pulling giant wagon loads of camp supplies....
any sign of logistical support elephants?
It just came to me that elephants are'nt the most loyal of beasts so how easy/hard would it be to use them for a flanking maneuver

Elephants were controllable until they charged or paniced. Then it was a case of hanging on for dear life. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif Indian elephants may have been better trained than the African variety. Certainly it was the Indians who used the most elephants in battle, stringing them out along their battlelines of massed archers.

I dunno if spears will hold them head on,but spears to an elephants flank will truly freak out the elephants and make them go out of control.

The Carthaginians used the African Forest Elephant which was (and if it still exists, is) smaller than the African Bush Elephant.
