Egyptian Archers
Archery has long been a prized skill in Egyptian armies. These men are well able to virtually destroy enemy units with arrows, using their speed over rough terrain to get them out of trouble. If attacked by cavalry they have to rely on other units for protection. They do not wear armour and go barefoot and and carry a good quality composite bow, a weapon which has an excellent range although it tends to delaminate in damp conditions - rarely a problem in the deserts of Egypt The arrows they fire are light reed shafts with bronze heads, as bronze is an easy metal to work in large quantities and reeds are plentiful along the Nile. Archers are sometimes recruited as mercenaries from Crete (from among pirates there) or Syria, but they do include native Egyptians in their ranks.

Hmmm...getting a bit anachronistic here - Archery was no longer a major military activity in Egypt under the Ptolemies http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif

I was thinking that, but as i have not looked at Rome too hard till now (cos they are fixing 56 bug for VI, YAY) I was not sure what dates they were including.

So Egypt will only be represented during the Ptolomies, hmm, interesting. Pity, cos i liked the Middle and Late Kingdom armies for the Egyptians quite a bit. Ah well

Have you guys noticed how long the bowstring is? Almost twice the length of the bow...

Now I have heard they used some kind of expanding bowstring, but isn't that a bad idea if you want power? What do I know, but it just doesn't seem such a good idea. But it could be that that way their bows could be small but fire very long arrows?
